Anishnawbe Health Toronto (AHT) is a fully accredited community health centre in Toronto that was founded to provide a comprehensive, culturally grounded approach to health care for the Aboriginal community. Rooted in the vision of Elder Joe Sylvester, AHT places Traditional Aboriginal practices and approaches at the core of its model of care. Clients have access to multidisciplinary health care practitioners, including Traditional Healers, Elders, and Medicine People, as well as ancient ceremonies and traditions.
The organization has expanded its services over time, including programs that support individuals seeking to exit homelessness and training opportunities in a culture-based setting. Through its Mission, Vision, Beliefs, and Principles, AHT continues to honor the original goal of creating a holistic healing centre for the Aboriginal community in Toronto.
This is a part-time, on-site Dentist role based in Toronto, ON. The Dentist will provide comprehensive oral health care, including examinations, diagnosis, treatment planning, restorative procedures, preventive care, and emergency dental services for community members. Daily responsibilities include performing clinical procedures such as fillings, extractions, and other treatments; ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests; and ensuring accurate, confidential documentation in patient health records.
The Dentist will work collaboratively with Traditional Healers, Elders, Medicine People, and an interdisciplinary team to support holistic, culturally safe care. Additional duties include educating clients on oral health and disease prevention, contributing to community outreach and health promotion initiatives, participating in quality improvement activities, and supporting training or mentoring of learners and staff as required.
- Licensed as a Dentist in Ontario, in good standing with the relevant regulatory body, with demonstrated clinical competence in general dentistry.
- Experience providing comprehensive oral health care, including preventive, restorative, and emergency dental services, ideally in a community or public health setting.
- Understanding of, and respect for, Traditional Aboriginal health practices, with a commitment to culturally safe, trauma-informed, and person-centered care.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaborative skills for working effectively with clients, families, Elders, Traditional Healers, and interdisciplinary care teams.
- Ability to maintain accurate clinical documentation, follow infection prevention and control standards, and adhere to professional, legal, and ethical guidelines.
- Experience working with Indigenous communities or underserved populations is an asset, as is familiarity with social determinants of health and community-based care.
- CPR certification and ongoing commitment to continuing professional development and quality improvement activities.
