Summary
Junior Interior Designer is part of a team delivering Space Layout & Interior design, Functional Space Planning and Furniture Procurement Support services. The role supports senior resources in information gathering, space planning and design development activities for complex projects as well as working drawings for low complexity design projects. The Junior Interior Designer works with internal BGIS staff as well as client and external consultants, ensuring timely, successful implementation of TFMS Services and client project work.
KeyDuties & Responsibilities Service Delivery – Functional Planning Services
- Support the Senior Workplace Strategist and other studio members in information gathering and functional planning activities.
- Develop stacking and blocking plans as well as detailed space requirements workbooks.
- Support the development of room data sheets for typical and special purpose spaces, drafting requirements and 3D modeling as required.
- Support the delivery of information gathering workshops.
- Support requirements documentation.
- Apply information from the functional program through space layout and design activities to translate requirements into functional space layouts in AutoCAD.
- Support the development of interior design and furniture concept documents, including research of materials/finishes, ordering samples and obtaining technical information.
- Support development of digital presentations to communicate design concepts, options and intent for client decision‑making.
- Render design ideas in 3‑D renderings, work drawings, plans, models and schemes using CAD software.
- Perform site verification, site measurements, furniture inventory and equipment inventory.
- Deliver space planning services including layouts for reconfigurations and minor modifications.
- Develop complete working drawing packages and specifications for low complexity design projects per applicable codes and standards under direction of Intermediate and Senior designers.
- Provide other interior design services as required.
- Comply with all regulatory, environmental, health and safety requirements.
- Incorporate sustainable practices, where practical, into project delivery, in accordance with client and BGIS processes.
- Support completion of technical assessments of client locations for strategic planning and programs.
- Develop detailed furniture specifications and documentation required to procure furniture per client standards, requirements and procurement policies.
- Develop detailed workpoint typicals to communicate functional requirements, including 3D models.
- Support development of tender documents for the client.
- Support hand‑off of delivery and installation of furniture to the MAC team and provide assistance through implementation.
- Manage time on different tasks effectively and report delays, barriers to progress or schedule impacts to the project lead.
- Support development and management of project reporting materials.
- Report progress to the project lead on a regular basis to support effective management of schedules and costs.
- Maintain positive relations to meet client objectives.
- Communicate pro‑actively with stakeholders, such as clients, contractors and project lead to ensure client satisfaction and BGIS success.
- Develop strong internal relationships with other lines of business to ensure alignment and support integrated delivery of services.
- Experience:
1-5 years in interior design, delivering interior design projects. - Strong drafting and AutoCAD skills. Knowledge of activity‑based workplace models is an asset.
- Ability to develop 3D models and renderings using Sketch Up, AutoCAD 3D or other.
- Understanding of building and fire codes, accessibility standards and industry standards such as LEED, WELL, etc.
- Creative and functional interior design solutions to solve client issues in partnership with senior team members.
- Strong written, oral and visual communication skills to convey design information and intent.
- Strong organizational and time management skills; manage multiple assignments simultaneously.
- Software proficiencies: MS Excel, MS Project, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, AutoCAD, Sketch Up, Bluebeam, Publisher.
- Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation:
Working towards NCIDQ certification; BAID degree from a CIDA accredited post‑secondary school or equivalent program.
This is a regular, full‑time position with a salary range of $52,864 – $66,080 per annum. The starting salary will be based on the successful candidate’s competencies, including but not limited to experience, education and performance related to this role.
