Job Description & How to Apply Below

Why 6ixDesign?

6ixDesign Inc. is a multidisciplinary architecture and engineering practice based in Toronto. We work across low-rise and mid-rise residential, multiplex, commercial, mixed-use, and institutional projects, carrying them from early feasibility through permit, tender, and construction. What sets us apart is structural: architecture and engineering sit under one roof, so coordination happens down the hall instead of across three firms and a two-week email chain.

As our project volume grows, we are looking for people who want real responsibility and the room to use it.

Growth:

We are expanding our architectural department, and this role sits at the centre of how our work actually gets produced. Your judgement will shape the quality of what leaves this office.

Integrated Practice:

Our architectural and engineering teams share models and resolve issues internally. You will spend less time chasing consultants and more time solving the actual problem.

Ownership:

We are a flat studio with short lines to the principals. You will own your sets, not assemble someone else’s.

Breadth of Work:

Multiplex and missing-middle housing, low- and mid-rise infill, additions and adaptive reuse, retail and institutional builds. You will not spend two years on a single building type.

Beautiful Workspace:

Our office is designed the way we design for our clients. It is a space built to support focused, collaborative work.

Competitive Salary:

We recognize and reward the value that each team member brings to the table. Our compensation packages reflect our dedication to attracting and retaining strong people.

Job Description

As Job Captain, you will own the drawing set. You will take projects from design development through permit and construction documentation, holding the set together technically while coordinating the consultants, resolving the details, and keeping the documents accurate and internally consistent. This is a production leadership role, not an oversight one. You will be in the model daily. You will report to the Architectural Manager and the principals, direct the work of technologists and interns on your projects, and work alongside our in-house engineering teams, external consultants, contractors, and municipal reviewers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Set Ownership: Take responsibility for the completeness, accuracy, and internal consistency of architectural drawing sets from design development through permit, construction documents, and tender.
  • Technical Documentation: Produce and direct the production of plans, sections, elevations, wall types, assemblies, schedules, and details to permit and construction-issue standards.
  • Code and Zoning Review: Apply Ontario Building Code requirements, zoning by‑laws, accessibility, life safety, and spatial separation provisions to the set, and identify compliance issues early.
  • Permit Submissions: Assemble permit packages, prepare code matrices and supporting documentation, and respond to examiner comments through to approval.
  • Consultant Coordination: Coordinate architectural documents against structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, and landscape drawings, and resolve conflicts before they reach the field.
  • Detailing: Develop and resolve building envelope, assembly, and interface details, and make the technical calls the set depends on.
  • Model and Standards Management: Manage Revit models, maintain BIM standards, worksets, and templates, and keep drawing production workflows consistent across the project.
  • Quality Control: Run redline and QA reviews on your sets before issue, and close out comments from senior staff and consultants.
  • Team Direction: Assign and review the work of architectural technologists, designers, and interns on your projects, balancing workload against deadlines and capability.
  • Construction Administration: Respond to RFIs, review shop drawings, support site reviews, and process change requests and site instructions.
  • Practice Development: Improve internal templates, typical details, QA checklists, and drawing production standards.
Must Have Qualifications
  • Approximately 4 to 7 years of architectural production experience, with demonstrated responsibility for…
