Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the School of Image Arts in The Creative School at Toronto Metropolitan University [ ] (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for an Open Rank (Tenure-stream) Faculty position in Film. The appointment shall be effective July 1, 2026, subject to final budgetary approval.
The ideal candidate will hold tenure at an equivalent institution and be able to demonstrate a mature history of accomplishment in the area of film production, as well as a capacity to thrive in positions of leadership. Appointment will be at the rank of Associate or Full Professor, depending on experience. We seek a distinguished filmmaker and educator with expertise in writing, directing, or producing, who has a strong record of internationally recognized feature films.
The successful candidate will bring leadership experience and a vision for shaping the program’s future, fostering innovation in film education, and expanding industry and academic partnerships. A willingness to take on a leadership role in the program is expected, including oversight of curriculum development, mentoring faculty, and guiding students while ensuring the program maintains its reputation for excellence. Additional responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, supervising graduate students, advancing creative and scholarly work, and contributing to the university’s commitment to equity and inclusion.

Candidates must hold a terminal degree (MFA or PhD) in Film or a related field. In addition, the successful candidate must present evidence of:
- A significant record of professional or artistic career accomplishments, with demonstrated international recognition as is consistent with the profile of a tenured faculty member;
- Proven capacity for program leadership, curricular innovation, advocacy and strategic planning in sync with the evolution of the film medium globally, preferably demonstrated by previous leadership experience in an academic setting;
- Demonstrated capacity for teaching excellence at all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, as evidenced by a teaching dossier that includes a teaching philosophy statement, experience with course and curriculum review and/or development, and examples of best practices in pedagogy. Familiarity with decolonial and/or anti-racist pedagogical practices will be considered an asset;
- Commitment to values of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion as it pertains to teaching and service activities, including a demonstrated ability to make learning accessible and inclusive for a diverse student population. Candidates with lived experience of diversity are encouraged to self-identify; and
- An ability to contribute to the life and community of the Film Program, the School of Image Arts and the University through collegial service.
