Description:

The Faculty of Music at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full-time tenure-stream position in the areas of Composition and Music Technology. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

Candidates must have earned a doctoral degree in composition, music technology, or a closely related area by the time of appointment, or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research (including technology-driven creative professional activities/practice) and teaching. We seek candidates whose research and teaching complement and enhance our existing departmental strengths; for further information see  . The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research at the highest international level.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of achievement that could include: composition of works involving current and next-generation digital media approaches; significant production credits; collaborations with established artists, ensembles, festivals, or arts organizations; software development; high-profile gallery installations; instrument design; the creation of innovative tools for music making and media manipulation; publications in top-ranked and field-relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards;

presentations at significant academic or professional conferences; awards and accolades; arts and/or research grants; the submitted research statement; and strong endorsements from referees of high standing.

Evidence of teaching excellence will be provided through teaching accomplishments and the teaching dossier, including a teaching statement, sample course materials, and teaching evaluations or other evidence of superior performance in teaching-related activities submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference. Other teaching-related activities can include performance as a teaching assistant or course instructor, experience leading successful workshops or seminars, or student mentorship.

The expected salary range is $110,000–$130,000 CAD per annum, depending on experience. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.

With an enrolment of about 900 students, the Faculty of Music is an academic division of Canada’s largest university, located in one of the world’s most diverse cities. The Faculty of Music offers undergraduate and graduate (MMus and DMA) degrees in composition and a MMus in Music Technology and Digital Media. Facilities include two performance venues (with a third in development) and a newly renovated research-creation and production space;

Depending on the candidate’s areas of interest and expertise, teaching may include graduate seminars in the Music Technology and Digital Media program; music technology courses for undergraduate students; undergraduate composition courses and graduate seminars; and individual composition lessons. The candidate will undertake graduate supervision of MMus/DMA composition theses and Music Technology and Digital Media major projects.
