Senior Leadership Trainers will work in pairs to facilitate and deliver high-quality and intentional Senior Leadership Programs at YMCA Camp Pine Crest. Through Senior Leadership Trainers, participants will gain exposure to leadership theory, group development, technical and interpersonal skill development, and opportunities to build resilience and confidence. The focus of our Senior Leadership Wilderness program is an out-trip, where Trainers lead participants on lengthy white-water canoe trips.

With the support of our Outdoor Pursuits team, Senior Leadership Trainers are responsible for the planning and execution of the trips, which includes menu planning, food preparation, gear selection and organization, and risk management. Trainers will plan and deliver programming on wilderness trips in a way that helps participants develop awareness and skills.

Trainers are expected to demonstrate a high level of accountability and act as positive, active, and inclusive role models within the staff team. They will help facilitate two short canoe trips during training for younger staff. Not only must Leadership Trainers be proficient in facilitating various leadership development sessions, they must also possess the certifications and experience necessary to manage risk and demonstrate good judgment while leading these trips.

Training opportunities are specific to our Senior Leadership (16 years) participants, with program lengths varying.

This summer our Senior Leadership White Water trips are:

  • The Moisie River (Mishta-shipu)The group will spend roughly a week at camp preparing and practicing their white water paddling skills. The group will travel to De Mille Lake, just beyond Labrador City, and paddle for roughly 27 days through a series of canyons and gorges and finish in the Gulf of St. Lawrenc. The Moisie is the longest, largest and most powerful of all the rivers of Quebec’s North Shore region
  • The Winisk River The group will spend roughly a week at camp preparing and practicing their white water paddling skills. The group will then travel by train and bus to the Pipestone River., which is a tributary of the Winisk. You will paddle for roughly 30 days and then fly from Peawanuck to Timmins and drive back to camp from there.

    On the trip you will journey through vast lakes and rushing whitewater flowing off the Canadian Shield towards Hudson Bay
  • In this role, you will:

  • Plan and execute activities, learning sessions and debriefs that help participants develop self-awareness and hard skills; coaching each Senior Leadership Participant within their group, helping them understand how their personal actions can affect the well-being of the whole group and how to act to improve themselves and the situation Plan, prepare, and facilitate an extended canoe trip that prioritizes risk management, skill development, and growth for the participants Ensure a high level of programming for their participants while on-site & on trip including the implementation of participant placements in various roles around camp.

    Supervision of program participants while on-site and on trip Attend the Leadership Information Day in late May to meet the families of their participants Ensure the equipment and safety needs of their group have been met through maintenance, inventory and repair of their assigned equipment and following all safety protocols and preparation before/while on trip Continuously builds relationships with members, staff, volunteers and community partners Perform other duties as assigned
  • You bring:

  • Minimum of 20 years old by the start of contract Minimum 3 years working with youth in leadership development Experience leading extensive white water canoe trips Demonstrated risk management skills in remote settings Ability to develop and facilitate high quality leadership development programming Current Standard First Aid, CPR-C, NLS, Wilderness…
