Toronto Zoo is seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic individual to apply for the Seasonal Bush Camp & Program Assessment Group Leader position. The role is a temporary, non-permanent position available approximately May – September 2026, with a rate of pay of $19.45 per hour (40 hours per week, 1 position open).
Position
Purpose:
The Group Leader will train, direct, and organize staff (guides and supervisors), maintain a motivated team, oversee daily programming, site preparation, and provide an outstanding overnight experience. The role also involves learning and engagement assessment, evaluation of programs, and supporting the Strategic Plan.
- Develop, maintain, and lead a team of guides; direct and organize staff as required.
- Develop rotating staff schedules.
- Act as a role model for other staff.
- Assist in daily monitoring of Bush Camp Guides to ensure high standards.
- Ensure the Bush Camp site is maintained to a high standard and purchase materials as needed.
- Provide daily coaching to Bush Camp Guides and feedback to supervisors.
- Create training manual and training schedule for guides.
- Deliver comprehensive training program for staff.
- Oversee development of Bush Camp programming in conjunction with a Learning & Engagement Coordinator.
- Liaise with the Learning & Engagement Coordinator and staff in other departments regarding behind‑the‑scenes, animal encounters, Zoomobile, etc.
- Communicate with the Zoo’s retail department to maintain inventory of camp products and ensure POS system functions.
- Assist in training guides in POS and cash handling protocol and merchandise storage.
- Ensure products are counted, organized, and POS system functions.
- Liaise with the Zoo’s caterer regarding meals and dietary needs.
- Print attendance sheets and enter daily attendance into the registration management system.
- Work with the Learning & Engagement team to develop assessment and evaluation plan for learning outcomes and indicators across programs and resources.
- Carry out assessment plan by observing programs, participants, and guests; conducting surveys/questionnaires.
- Compile assessment and evaluation into reports and share with the Learning & Engagement team.
- Follow health & safety protocols, recognize and report hazards/concerns.
- Complete required Vulnerable Sector Search.
- Follow all policies and standard operating procedures.
- Attend required training as needed.
- Assist guests on site as required and provide excellent customer service.
- Other duties as assigned by Supervisor or designate.
- Recent graduate or currently enrolled in post‑secondary education, preferably in education and/or biology, or equivalent experience.
- Experience working with children in a learning environment.
- Experience leading educational programs is preferred.
- Demonstrated leadership experience with youth.
- Strong organizational ability, attention to detail and recordkeeping.
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
- Knowledge of animal, plant, and conservation issues.
- Interpretive teaching methods knowledge is an asset.
- Standard First Aid & CPR “C” certification required.
- Commitment to sustainable practices.
- Familiarity with the Zoo and its exhibits preferred.
- Ensure all applicable licenses and certificates remain valid and provide copies at time of hire and upon renewal.
- Knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health & Safety Act and WHMIS is an asset.
- Unrestricted Class G driver’s licence in Ontario with good driving record (preferred).
- Computer literacy.
- Availability to work weekends, shifts, and holidays as scheduled.
- Diplomatic interaction with staff and public with courtesy and efficiency.
- Well‑developed interpersonal skills.
- Effective communication in English, written and verbal.
Compensation: $19.45 per hour, 40 hours per week.
Schedule: Approx. May – September 2026 (Temporary).
