The Dalla Lana School of Public Health invites applications for a full-time tenure stream position in Black health within the Division of Social and Behavioural Health Sciences. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor, with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2026.

Candidates must have earned a PhD degree or an equivalent doctoral degree in a social or health science by the time of appointment or shortly thereafter, with a demonstrated record of excellence in research and teaching. We seek candidates whose scholarship encompasses Black health studies, critical race theory, African/Black Feminist theorization, anti-colonial (decolonial) studies, intersectional health experience including confronting anti‑black racism, misogynoir, classism, heterosexism, ableism and/or religious/spiritual oppression, among other factors;

racism and colonization as social determinants of health, resistance and health, racism within health‑related institutions, organizations and professions and other public health related issues. We also encourage candidates with lived experiences to apply.

We seek candidates whose research and teaching interests complement and enhance our existing strengths in the Division of Social and Behavioural Sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue innovative and independent research, and to establish an outstanding, competitive, and externally funded research program. Candidates will be able to demonstrate how their research and teaching interests align with the DLSPH Academic Plan.

Faculty members within the Dalla Lana School of Public Health teach at the undergraduate and graduate level.

Candidates must provide evidence of research excellence which can be demonstrated by a record of publications in top‑ranked and field relevant journals or forthcoming publications meeting high international standards, the submitted research statement, presentations at significant conferences, awards and accolades, and strong endorsements from referees.

Evidence of excellence in teaching will be provided through teaching accomplishments, the teaching dossier (with required materials outlined below) submitted as part of the application, as well as strong letters of reference.

The expected salary range is $130,000-$150,000 CAD per annum, depending on experience. Negotiations beyond this salary range will be considered for exceptionally qualified candidates.

The Dalla Lana School of Public Health has an illustrious history that began in the 1920’s and continued with a recent renaissance beginning in 2008 (see synopsis). The DLSPH is an internationally recognized community of scientists, teachers, students, practitioners, policy makers and citizens, creating new knowledge, educating change makers, advancing practice and guiding the way to better, more equitable outcomes in population health and health systems – locally, nationally and globally.

We are the most prominent school of public health in Canada, and home to 85 core faculty, over 1000 graduate students and community medicine residents. The DLSPH brings in over 40 CAD million in research funding each year.
