CTL Writing Support offers skilled, sensitive and supportive writing instruction designed to foster student skills and confidence in order to enable students to reach their full potential. Job Title: CTL Writing Instructor Embedded in Political Science

Minimum Qualifications:
• Excellent written and oral communication skills;
• A completed Master’s degree;
• Relevant experience tutoring writing one-on-one and/or teaching in university courses with a significant writing instruction component;
• A scholarly approach to one-to-one writing instruction, including familiarity with best practices;
• Experience developing tailored instructional materials and delivering tailored instructional sessions;
• Experience collaborating and working effectively as part of a team.
Preferred Qualifications:
• An academic background in Political Science or related area;
• Experience teaching in Political Science;
• A completed PhD or PhD coursework;
• An awareness of recent developments and issues in the field of writing studies, in particular familiarity with scholarly literature around pedagogies of care, decolonial and/or anti-racist approaches to writing instruction;
• Experience working with a diverse group of students and training in second-language instruction at the university level;
• Experience in teaching writing online, particularly in a synchronous teaching context;
• And proficiency with platforms used regularly at UTSC for online learning (WC Online, Quercus, Zoom and Teams)

Description of duties:
Embedded writing instructors teach critical analysis, critical reading, modes of argument, research skills, and methods for reading, planning, drafting and revising texts in the context of a single course. The embedded writing instructor will be part of the teaching team for two sections of POLA
01:
Critical Issues in Politics I. One section is offered online and the other in-person. The embedded writing instructor in POLA
01 will attend meetings of the teaching team (at least three over the term), provide one-to-one instruction to students, and develop pedagogical and assessment materials. They may also be asked to hold writing office hours, respond to student questions via chat or email, facilitate course-based writing retreats, collaborate with writing support coordinators, course instructors and/or course TAs to develop and teach tailored workshops.
Writing instruction will be delivered both online and in person. For Fall 2023 and Winter 2024, we anticipate that most meetings and one-to-one instruction will be remote, using WC Online and possibly other platforms such as Quercus, Zoom, or Teams, but instructors may be asked to offer a limited number of hours of in-person instruction. Pedagogical materials may be text- or video-based.
Workshops will use the mode of delivery of the course. For online instruction, writing instructors should have access to a stable, high-speed internet line, a computer with a working webcam and microphone and a quiet workspace.
Appointment Dates:
September 1, 2023 to April 2024
Hours will be heavily weighted around assignment deadlines, and some hours may be early morning, evening, or on weekends.
