Course

Description:

The course covers concepts and methods used for quality improvement in healthcare and builds on the basics of Improvement Science. Topics include the methods and tools required to design and implement a quality improvement project from start to finish. The course covers assessment of organizational and team enablers for successful improvement, common methods, tools and measurement techniques used to improve healthcare delivery, concluding with the essentials for sustaining and spreading change.

Included within the methods will be Experience-Based Co-design and Statistical Process Control.

Objectives:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of key enablers for organizational and team success in making change, and the elements required for end-to-end design of a quality improvement initiative.
  • Describe and distinguish three approaches to improvement:
    Lean, Six Sigma and the Model for Improvement, and appreciate when each is most applicable.
  • Apply basic diagnostic tools to a quality improvement project, and demonstrate an ability to distinguish the use of specific tools to address different types of healthcare delivery opportunities.
  • Understand and apply key principles for measurement for improvement, including different types of measures, subgrouping as a method for understanding root cause and for driving improvement, and statistical process control as a method for understanding variation and interpreting data.
  • Demonstrate methods for cascading measures in a transparent way across all levels of an organization.
  • Discuss and experiment with different strategies for generating ideas for change prior to testing them using small, rapid cycle change.
  • Appreciate the value of small, rapid cycle change and demonstrate an understanding of the application of developmental, testing, and implementation PDSA cycles.
  • Explore and discuss the concepts and tools for improving the health literacy of patient-facing change ideas.
  • Explore and apply methods and tools for capturing and understanding the patient experience and engaging patients/family in improvement work.
  • Explore and apply principles for sustaining improvement project results and for planning spread.

Class schedule:
Modular sessions from 8:30 am to noon (last session from 8:30 am to 3 pm) on Thursdays and Fridays between September 24 and December 11, 2026.

Qualifications:

  • Significant experience in quality improvement in health care, preferably with leadership, implementation, and evaluation experience including corporate operations and oversight up to Board level.
  • A robust understanding of the role of quality improvement in the Canadian healthcare system.
  • Past teaching experience related to quality improvement, patient safety and innovation, at the graduate level.
  • Prior experience in curriculum development and adult teaching-learning methods.
  • Experience working in more applied settings including for example as a preceptor.
  • Comfortable with electronic teaching tools such as Learning Management Systems (e.g., Quercus), PowerPoint, as well as on-line collaboration tools (Blogs, Wikis, Discussion Boards, Webinars, or Video-conferencing).

Duties:

  • Co-Course instructor for a professional graduate course using competency-based learning and assessment methods.
  • Must be accessible to students outside of classroom hours.
  • Available evenings and weekends.
