Course

Description:

This course will introduce the fundamental concepts of information and communication technology for those students with a health science background, but no formal training in computer or information technology. The course will cover material that is relevant to health informatics and focus on the understanding of hardware and software systems. We will focus on the proper design and specification of health information systems.

This course will provide you with the background knowledge to understand the technical details of healthcare ICTs and apply this knowledge to the design and specification of systems.

Objectives:

  • Explain the usage of computer networks for distributed health services.
  • Discuss advanced health technology concepts with stakeholders.
  • Model a computerized solution for a decentralized healthcare process.
  • Explain vibe coding and advancements in the use of AI for coding applications.

Class schedule:
Weekly sessions from 9:10 am to noon on Wednesdays between September 9 and December 2, 2026.

In-person

Qualifications:

  • A PhD or Masters level education with experience in health informatics, preferably in the areas of ICT adoption, implementation, and evaluation.
  • A robust understanding of information technology, operating systems, networks, system security.
  • Experience with the use of AI in coding healthcare applications.
  • Past teaching experience related to health informatics, preferably at the graduate level.
  • Prior experience in curriculum development and adult teaching-learning methods.
  • Comfortable with electronic teaching tools such as Learning Management Systems (e.g., Quercus), PowerPoint, as well as online collaboration tools (Blogs, Wikis, Discussion Boards, Webinars, or Video-conferencing).

Duties:

  • Course instructor for a professional graduate course using competency-based learning and assessment methods.
  • Must be accessible to students outside of classroom hours.
  • Available evenings and weekends.

Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
