Course Description

MHI
2010H is an extension of MHI
2005Y. The practicum is the applied learning component of the Master of Health Informatics education.

The overall objective of the practicum is to broaden the student’s appreciation for and skills in managing health services organizations by allowing students to evaluate, test and further develop their competencies in a practical setting.

The MHI
2010H Practicum Extension supports students’ ongoing learning and contribution at practicum placement sites. The course is designed to build on work and reflection to date, as achieved via the MHI
2005Y Practicum course. The Learning Contract, Discussion Board and Journal are repeated elements of that course, and the Practicum Report is a document to be prepared to evaluate both practicum and extension work.

Note:

There is one final evaluation due from preceptor. There are no live group workshops for this course, however students are welcome to communicate with the course instructor, for any reason related to assignments and/or extension experience throughout the duration of the course.

Objectives
  • Articulate their individual strengths as related to the field in general and to specific work opportunities
  • Produce a resume and cover letter well‑suited to the health informatics work environment
  • Identify their own learning needs and design a learning contract that will address those needs.
  • Complete the activities outlined in the learning contract, as negotiated with their preceptor and course instructor.
  • Optimize their learning opportunities by reflection, through their learning journal and discussions with the preceptor and course instructor.
  • Evaluate their professional strengths and development needs for successful career progression through self‑reflection.
  • Understand the key components of successful career planning in a healthcare environment.

Class schedule:
Course takes place at students’ practicum site.

Qualifications
  • A PhD or Masters level with experience in strategic planning and stakeholder relations in healthcare.
  • A robust understanding of professional development and project management.
  • Demonstrably strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Teaching experience related to professional development and experiential learning, preferably at the graduate level.
  • Prior experience in curriculum development and adult teaching‑learning methods is an asset.
  • Comfortable with electronic teaching tools such as Learning Management Systems (e.g., Quercus).
  • Well‑connected to organizations within the health care industry.
Duties
  • Course instructor for a professional graduate course using competency‑based learning and assessment methods.
  • Responsible for full year of course delivery and assessment of student outcomes. Must be accessible to students outside of classroom hours.
  • Responsible for the development and retention of preceptors for MHI, leveraging strong existing base.
  • Responsible for the development, acquisition and oversight of practicum placements for all students, working in conjunction with MHI Program Assistant.
  • Responsible for developing and delivering workshops (including those by guest experts) tailored to students’ success within the practicum (e.g., resume and cover letter development, interview skills, for the practicum application process).
  • Responsive to deadlines (e.g., ensuring first release of practicum placements by last week of January).
  • Preparatory work in the summer (May to August) is to be expected.
