Secondary Teacher – Native Learning Centre Downtown (Science, Math, Physical Education)
Overall PurposeThe Toronto District School Board invites applications from qualified teachers for the position of Secondary Teacher – Native Learning Centre Downtown. The aim is to deliver an education delivery model that improves outcomes for First Nations, Métis and Inuit students, providing culturally relevant lessons and supporting Indigenous identities, academic success and overall well‑being.
Summary of Duties- Provide leadership in fostering equity and inclusion in program development and implementation.
- Deliver culturally relevant instruction based on students’ learning styles, strengths and needs.
- Integrate Indigenous knowledge into classroom learning.
- Assist the school community in addressing issues pertaining to the Indigenous community.
- Apply effective Indigenous Education teaching and learning strategies and practices.
- Perform initial and ongoing assessments to support and monitor Indigenous students’ success.
- Mentor and collaborate with education partners to adapt and support classroom programs for First Nations, Métis and Inuit students.
- Support and coordinate ongoing implementation of program initiatives and best practices.
- Co‑plan, co‑teach and collaborate cross‑curricularly with colleagues and central staff.
- Collaborate with the Indigenous Food Sovereignty program.
- Assist in coordinating access for students to supports and interventions.
- Perform other duties as assigned with consideration to the unique needs of the school.
- Ontario College of Teachers’ Certificate of Qualification in positive standing.
- Intermediate and/or senior teaching qualifications in Math and/or Science and/or Physical Education (preferably more than one subject area).
- First Nations, Métis, and Inuit Studies qualification is an asset.
- Knowledge of Indigenous language(s) and culture(s) is considered an asset.
- Preference for candidates with lived experience as a First Nations, Métis or Inuit person and a strong understanding of Indigenous ways of knowing.
- Knowledge of current education issues and barriers and available supports for Indigenous education.
- In‑depth knowledge of the Ontario First Nations, Métis and Inuit Education Policy Framework and relevant research.
- Experience developing materials to support teachers and schools working with Indigenous populations.
- Demonstrated ability to promote equitable practices valuing inclusion and diversity.
- Commitment to maintaining a learning environment that supports human rights.
- Reputation as an innovative and stimulating educator.
- Organizational, team‑building, problem‑solving, planning, mentoring and staff development skills.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Proven strength in problem‑solving and adapting to change.
- Competency in computer skills and electronic communication.
The successful candidate’s salary will be commensurate with placement on the secondary teacher salary grid. Position of Responsibility allowances do not transfer to this role. At the end of the term, candidates will either apply for a central position or return to their home school, subject to staffing/placement procedures.
