Nature of AssignmentThe Reading and Writing Excellence (RWE) program addresses students’ academic language development, critical thinking, academic reading and writing needs through online support as well as bi-weekly appointments. Since the RWE program addresses language‑ and culture-related needs of students transitioning to university-level writing, students prioritized for the RWE program are English Language Learners, Gen 1.5 students, and students not familiar with Academic Writing.
Students who seek higher levels of academic writing skills also apply to participate in this program. Participation in the RWE program is voluntary, yet students find great value in the personalized feedback and support they receive from their RWE writing instructor, which boosts their confidence and enables them to accelerate their development of critical thinking and academic writing competence.

Job Title: ELD - RWE Program Writing Instructor
Number of Positions: Up to six (6)
Size of Appointment (hours): May collectively add up to a total of 1,350 hours
Session: Fall 2026 or Fall/Winter
Minimum Qualifications:- A minimum Master’s degree in a relevant field
- Proven track record for supporting the development of critical thinking and academic communication skills of university students for whom English is an additional language
- Relevant experience teaching writing one-to-one
- Teaching in university courses with a significant writing instruction component
- Proven ability to provide insightful and pedagogically sound feedback to student writing that encourages critical thinking and language development within 15-minute time-frames
- Experience supporting students’ academic writing skills
- Training in education or applied linguistics
- Experience working with and training a diverse group of students in second-language instruction at the university level
- Experience in teaching writing online, particularly in a synchronous teaching context, is an asset
- Proven success in teaching scientific writing for STEM students at university, or academic writing to students with extremely low Academic Language proficiency at university
- The successful candidate will have the ability to collaborate with writing instructors, faculty, and program staff to develop instructional materials and workshops while maintaining constructive relationships. They will also have a demonstrated commitment to fostering equity, diversity and inclusion.
For this position, the Centre for Teaching and Learning favours applicants with a long-term commitment to English Language Development teaching.
Previous experience is the more relevant criterion than the need to acquire experience in respect of this posted position.
Description of Duties:The chief duty of the Writing Instructor for the RWE program is to support students wishing to expand their active vocabulary, increase their academic language competence and confidence, and develop critical reading, thinking and writing skills over a sustained period. The instructor’s responses model a rich spectrum of language usage and good academic integrity practices.
The writing instructor will hold 30-minute in-person meetings every two weeks (or weekly, where needed in individual cases) and provide personalized feedback and guidance to student posts on Quercus. Instructors are responsible for encouraging their students to keep up with the daily reading and writing routine of the program and nurturing students’ academic writing ability.
