The Karate Instructor delivers programming, develops short‑term lesson plans incorporating physical literacy guidelines, and ensures the unique needs of participants are met. Instructors maintain a safe environment at all times.
Responsibilities- Instruct participants in YMCA Karate Program
- Develop and implement sequential weekly lesson plans based on YMCA program syllabus
- Assist Lead Instructor with Gradings
- Recognize participant learning styles and deliver content accordingly
- Coach and develop participants to meet success
- Communicate (verbal and written) child progress to parents and Supervisor
- Maintain accurate, up‑to‑date weekly progress sheets and records for participants
- Take attendance, ensuring participants are signed in and out of the program
- Take down equipment, checking that equipment is safe and in good repair; report malfunctions immediately and remove damaged equipment from circulation
- Build relationships with members and seek opportunities to share YMCA story and educate members and guests on YMCA as a charity
- Ensure qualifications and certifications required by YMCA and regulatory standards are current at all times
- Actively participate in scheduled programs, meetings, and special events
- Assist program members, volunteers, and staff to access additional appropriate programs offered at this location
- Integrate value of philanthropy and volunteerism in dealings with members, volunteers, donors, and staff
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Current Standard First Aid & CPR level C
- Minimum 1 year of active Karate training
- Experience teaching Youth Leadership is an asset
- Well‑developed interpersonal and relationship‑building skills; ability to establish rapport and excellent communication with members, staff, and volunteers
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and building a sense of belonging
- Flexibility regarding schedule, including days, evenings, and weekends
