Illustration‑Rise Pop Culture (0.5 credit)

(Fall 2026: 9 September 2026 – 8 December 2026; Thursday 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM; In‑Person)

Course Description
This course traces the development of illustration from the 19th to the 21st centuries, in relation to literacy and the growth of popular culture. It examines illustrations for posters, books, advertising and periodicals, viewed through the relationship between illustration and written narrative, the effects of evolving printing technology and the publishing industry, and the spread of the popular arts. The course emphasizes both the historical and contemporary scenes, looking at significant illustrators and works in global contexts.

Responsibilities

Develop the course outline and prepare studio materials.

Deliver lectures, facilitate critiques, and manage grading.

Conduct mid‑term and final evaluations/reviews.

Ensure health & safety compliance and meet academic and curricular deadlines.

Qualifications

Terminal degree in art, design, or a relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional or practical experience.

Experience teaching at the post‑secondary level (equivalent experience considered an asset).

Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.

Demonstrated leadership and experience promoting a respectful and inclusive work and learning environment for students, staff, and faculty.

Terms of Employment
Sessional appointments are fixed‑term annual contracts. Compensation includes a per‑course pay scale of $7,508.00 (per 0.5 credit course) plus 7 % in lieu of benefits and vacation pay, in accordance with the Employment Standards Act. Positions are subject to budgetary approval and satisfactory enrolment levels.
