COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
This course explores intersections between the visual arts and the law. Artworks are often accorded special legal status, generating ethical and political entanglements. Students will learn the basic legal principles that inform the context in which artists, institutions, and other art‑world agents operate. Classes will examine case studies and controversies related to copyright, intellectual property, censorship, free expression, artists’ moral rights, business practices, cultural heritage protection, repatriation, stolen art, forgeries, and court definitions of artistic works.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Teaching and teaching‑related responsibilities may include but are not limited to: course outline development, studio preparation and delivery inclusive of lectures, critiques, grading, mid‑term evaluations, final evaluations/reviews, and health & safety oversight; meeting academic and curricular requirements and deadlines.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Terminal degree in art, design or a relevant discipline and/or equivalent professional/practical experience.
- Experience teaching at the post‑secondary level is an asset; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated leadership and experience promoting a respectful and inclusive learning environment for students, staff, and faculty.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Sessional appointments are fixed‑term annual contracts. Compensation includes a per‑course pay scale with a salary level of $7,508.00 (per 0.5 credit course) plus 7% in lieu of benefits and vacation pay, per the provisions of the Employment Standards Act. Positions are subject to budgetary approval and satisfactory enrolment levels.
