The Royal Conservatory of Music’s Glenn Gould School (GGS) is seeking an instructor to teach a fourth-year music history course for Bachelor of Music students. The course is the second part of a yearlong sequence, following a first semester focused on documentaries about composers. Building on that foundation, the course should examine music history through a contemporary and media-oriented lens, helping students consider how composers, repertoire, and broader musical narratives are presented to the public today.

Topics may include popular media, cultural institutions, and changing social sensibilities. The goal of the course is to help students develop a more nuanced understanding of how music history is interpreted, communicated, and made relevant to contemporary audiences.

This course meets for 1.5 hours of weekly instruction, for a total of 12 weeks (Spring Term) on Mondays from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m.

Job Requirements

What We're Looking For
  • A Master of Music degree or equivalent is required; a DMA, PhD, or equivalent doctoral degree is preferred.
  • A thorough familiarity with music history and an ability to place musical topics within broader cultural and historical contexts are essential.
  • Familiarity with current public discourse and the presentation of music through media is strongly preferred.
  • Previous teaching experience at the post-secondary level is an asset.

  • The selection process may include a mock teaching assignment.
  • The successful applicant will be expected to submit a week-by-week course outline.
  • A valid Vulnerable Sector Check is a required condition of employment.
