Description:

Enrolment is limited to students in the Pathobiology specialist program in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology.

This course introduces the use and impact of genetic model systems and organisms in exploring aspects of human reproduction, development, aging and disease.

We will highlight ethical issues in animal research, genetic manipulation, and disease modeling.

This course also introduces the bioinformatics concepts and methods used in biological data analysis.

Estimated course enrollment: ~ 30 students

Estimated TA support: 1 TA (70 hours)

Class schedule: Tuesday 9am-11am (class) and Tuesday 11am-12pm (tutorial)

Sessional dates of appointment: September 1, 2026 – December 31, 2026

Sessional Lecturer I - $3,339.16
Sessional Lecturer I – Long Term - $3,573.54
Sessional Lecturer II - $3,573.54
Sessional Lecturer II – Long Term - $3,658.62
Sessional Lecturer III - $3,658.62
Sessional Lecturer III – Long Term - $3,750.45

Minimum qualifications: PhD student in computer science or in a health science discipline with a strong background in machine learning and its application in biomedical research. Excellent programming skills in Python are required.

Preferred qualifications: Extensive research experience with applying ML in biomedical research is preferred.

Description of duties: Teaching three weekly two-hour classes on topics introducing computational methods and machine learning to undergraduate students. The duties will also creating examination assignments and examination questions covering the material presented to students, as well as reviewing a debate among students. Duties of this position shall be performed at the St. George campus.
