Course description:Develop a practical approach to being a more productive engineer, based on the premise that for technology to become a reality, it must be translated through people. A key is understanding engineers lead in ways that reflect their skills and mind set. Learning frameworks and personal working styles inventories provide practical tools toassistthe student to understand human nature and to become a competent leader of self and of teams.

The student prepares to become a competent leader by first developing a deeper understanding of self and then undertaking to learn (understand and integrate) key skills, character attributes, and purposeful behaviours. Strategies for development of high-performance teams are also presented. The material is delivered through lectures, readings, in-classdiscussionand a team project. Attendance is mandatory to enable learning through experiential activities and critical reflection.

The project is based on the team interviewing a senior leader at an engineering-intensive company or senior leader in the community.

Number of positions (est): One (1) position

Class schedule: 1, 3-hour class per week

Sessional dates of appointment: January 1, 2027 - April 30, 2027

Hours: 1 HCE (up to a maximum of 230 hrs)

Salary: CUPE minimum salary rates for a half course (HCE), inclusive of vacation pay, are:
Sessional Lecturer 1 - $9,997.47;
Sessional Lecturer 1 Long Term - $10,699.22;
Sessional Lecturer 2 - $10,699.22;
Sessional Lecturer 2 Long Term - $10,953.96;
Sessional Lecturer 3 - $10,953.96 and Sessional Lecturer 3 Long Term - $11,212.15. Should rates stipulated in the Collective Agreement vary from ratesstatedin this posting, the rates statedin the Collective Agreement shall prevail.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must have experience studying and teaching relational leadership and/or engineering leadership. The applicant must have experience and knowledge of evidence-based research that links a variety of leadership conceptstoengineering practice.

They must also have experience infacilitatingthe personal development of students in enhancing their leadership capabilities. Applicants should have a strong record of delivering engaging experiential lectures with an ability to explain concepts clearly and creatively as well as connect them effectively to the lived experience of the students.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching leadership to engineering students.

Description of duties
  • Collaboration and coordination with instructors teaching other sections of the course
  • Delivery of course material in an integrated lecture-practical format
  • Creation of content thatleveragesengineering thinking/experience in teaching leadership
  • Assessment, feedback, and evaluation of student capability and improvement
  • Ability to convert to online duties if required.
  • Preparation and grading of a deferred examination may also be required.

This job is postedin accordance withthe CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement.
