Market Analyst Forecasting Specialist
Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results‑driven professional to join our team in this role. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Day Ahead Operations, the position is responsible for preparing load and weather forecasts, analyzing related data and providing written and verbal commentaries.
Key Accountabilities- Prepare daily forecasts of short‑term electricity demand in the electricity markets/control areas/zones in which OPG does business. Regularly brief OPG staff on forecasts.
- Assist in maintaining and adapting proprietary short‑term demand forecasting applications.
- Evaluate short‑term electricity demand forecasts prepared by Independent System Operators (ISOs) and identify potential discrepancies relative to proprietary forecasts.
- Assist in appraising publicly and commercially available weather model predictions and providing short‑term forecasts and assessments of potential weather impacts on OPG operations, including wind, solar, algae and debris run risks, extreme weather, and anomalous precipitation risks for hydroelectric generation.
- Conduct analysis of short‑term electricity demand drivers, providing assessments of weather‑based demand response in relevant markets.
- Provide information to support operational decision making.
- Remain current with short‑term electricity demand and weather forecasting methods; recommend value‑adding opportunities to management.
- Participate in research studies or sector working groups on forecasting of electricity demand and weather, providing technical guidance.
- Assist with specialized technical assignments as required.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Meteorology, Atmospheric Physics, Econometrics, Economics, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering or an equivalent field.
- Minimum of 6 years of experience in a similar forecasting or market analysis role.
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently in a flexible hybrid office environment.
- Experience or knowledge of the electric utility business and the electricity marketplace in Ontario and neighboring power systems.
- Experience in consulting with management, preparing forecasts, and conducting studies related to economic or energy market issues.
- Experience collecting data and developing/maintaining databases used for market analysis, forecasting, risk analysis, and scenario planning.
- Experience with econometric/statistical models and interpretation of weather prediction models.
- Experience with Metrix
ND/Metrix
IDR is considered an asset.

Work Location:
Toronto, ON until Summer 2025 when the role moves to the new Corporate Headquarters at 1908 Colonel Sam Drive, Oshawa, Ontario. Hybrid office environment.
Travel: 10%
SalarySalary Range: $1,664.34 - $2,583.30 per week.
