The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) is seeking a passionate and experienced Occupational Hygienist to join its Safety and Environment Department. This is a unique opportunity to lead initiatives that identify, assess and control workplace health hazards across diverse operational environments, including subway systems, bus garages, maintenance facilities, construction projects and administrative workplaces.

Reporting to the Director – Occupational Hygiene and Environment, you will play a key role in protecting the health, safety and wellbeing of TTC employees and customers across one of North America’s largest and most complex public transit system. As an Occupational Hygiene subject matter expert you will help identify, assess and control workplace health hazards, support compliance with legislative requirements, and contribute to the continuous improvement of corporate occupational hygiene programs.

You will lead and support initiatives designed to anticipate, prevent and control workplace health hazards by developing, implementing and maintaining occupational hygiene standards, programs, procedures and training. You will monitor compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, standards and best practices, provide guidance on actual and potential compliance issues, and help ensure TTC programs remain effective, practical and aligned with emerging industry trends and occupational health risks.

You will investigate and evaluate existing or potential workplace health hazards across a wide range of operational environments, including transit facilities, maintenance operations, construction projects and administrative workplaces. This includes identifying, assessing and evaluating physical, chemical, biological and ergonomic hazards; assessing the effectiveness of existing controls; conducting risk assessments; and determining appropriate monitoring, sampling and testing strategies.

You will conduct and/or oversee occupational hygiene sampling and testing activities using specialized equipment and methodologies. You will accurately assess workplace exposures, interpret findings, and apply scientific and analytical expertise to develop practical recommendations that prevent, eliminate, control or reduce occupational health risks.

You will provide expert advice and direction to management, employees and other stakeholders regarding occupational hygiene issues, legislated requirements and corporate policies and procedures. As a trusted technical resource, you will influence decision-making, support continuous improvement initiatives, and collaborate with operational departments, Occupational Health & Employee Wellbeing, WSIB, consultants, regulatory agencies and other external partners to address workplace health concerns and improve employee health outcomes.
