Our central role includes managing the provincial power grid in real-time, overseeing and evolving Ontario’s electricity market, engaging with government, municipalities and Indigenous communities, and planning for Ontario’s future electricity needs. The Supervisor, Ancillary Service Management role is a key position within Ontario’s energy procurement ecosystem, contributing to resource adequacy program design, contract negotiations, and broader energy policy development. As part of the Resource and System Adequacy leadership team, the successful candidate will help guide major procurement initiatives that shape Ontario’s future energy landscape while overseeing the province’s ancillary service provider portfolio essential for grid reliability.
The role requires strong leadership, organization, a positive mindset, and a willingness to learn; direct experience with IESO resource adequacy programs is helpful but not mandatory.
What you’ll do
In this role, you’ll make a meaningful impact by contributing to the IESO team and supporting the electricity needs of the province through:
- Ancillary service portfolio oversight – overseeing current contracted suppliers to ensure they are meeting their contractual obligations, including tracking outage activity, force majeure requests and periodic testing requirements such as annual black start tests.
- Ancillary service procurement design – oversee the design of any ancillary service procurement mechanisms, strategies and processes appropriate for the type of procurement (standard offer, auction, competitive RFP, negotiation) and the type of ancillary service being sought.
In a typical day, you will:
- Lead the development of procurement documents, including program rules, request for proposals, and contracts. Help manage internal and external legal teams in drafting documents
- Implement and execute procurement processes, ensuring that all obligations are fulfilled in accordance with procurement/contract requirements
- Lead contract negotiations with counter parties, ensuring IESO and rate payer interests are upheld and IESO’s reputation and professionalism are maintained
- Remain flexible and available to assist with other projects or procurement activities and perform other duties as required.
