Overview

Your role as a Mechanical Designer will involve preparing 3D models, drawings, and other technical documents predominantly for mining projects. You will deliver high‑quality service, maintain positive relationships with colleagues and clients, and actively contribute to projects within the mechanical engineering discipline in Ontario, nationally, and internationally. Type of Position: Regular

Responsibilities
  • Perform mine plant layout design for studies and detailed design projects of high complexity.
  • Design materials handling and conveyor systems, chutes, tanks, plate work, and mill processing buildings.
  • Prepare mechanical layout design and detail drawings, coordinate and manage project drafting and drawing updates.
  • Prepare designs using 3D CAD software (Intergraph Smart 3D, AutoCAD, Solidworks).
  • Participate in project coordination, internal and client review meetings; coordinate project specifications with construction documents.
  • Carry out technical assignments such as system setup, deliverable lists, research.
  • Manage mechanical layout budget, schedule, and work‑power loading.
  • Support development of project design basis, schedules, budgets, and progress metrics.
  • Communicate with vendors, conduct vendor reviews, and leverage vendor data in designs.
  • Participate in site inspections, field reviews, quality assessments, and oversee testing.
  • Interpret plant PFDs, P&IDs, and plant battery limit constraints.
  • Perform clash detection, prepare and develop proposals.
  • Mentor and train junior designers and engineers.
  • Work on multiple projects concurrently.
  • Work with 3D point‑cloud scan data.

Qualifications & Experience
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in mechanical layout and design drafting of mineral processing plants.
  • Mechanical Engineering Technologist/Technician diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with gold, silver, copper, zinc, and lead commodities.
  • Experience in mechanical engineering for mine process plants, knowledge of mechanical systems, materials, and industry standards.
  • Knowledge of mechanical, building codes and standards.
  • Experience in designing chutes and plate work.
  • Experience with in large, multidisciplinary projects (EPCM an asset).
  • Experience with greenfield and brownfield projects.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD tools such as Smart 3D, SP3D, Solidworks, CADworx, and AutoCAD.
  • Knowledge of 3D point clouds considered an asset.
  • Ability to travel and perform site work.
  • Initiative to identify tasks, take ownership, and see assignments through to completion.
  • Experience with mechanical design and layout in hydropower, pulp & paper, and clean energy considered an asset.
  • Thorough understanding of mechanical engineering concepts and ability to communicate ideas.

  • Annual base salary (40 hrs/week) between $118,200 and $144,500.
