The Mines and Minerals Division of the Ministry of Energy and Mines works to support responsible land use management and mineral resource development by administration of the Mining Act, providing public geoscience information and client services.
We are looking for one specialized professional engineer who has knowledge of environmental rehabilitation practices, to provide expertise specific to dam construction and maintenance, and to lead significant, contentious and technically complex mine rehabilitation projects.

In this role, you will:
- carry out detailed structural planning, hydrologic, hydraulic, hydrogeologic, and geotechnical studies and prepare reports
- prepare detailed analyses and designs for new structural systems such as tailings dams
- conduct and/or coordinate surveys and engineering/technical investigations
- lead operational audits of Crown-held and private sector water management facilities
- lead engineering compliance reviews such as the auditing mine closure plans and technical/financial
- lead engineering review of development or alterations of mine tailings dam structures
- manage, plan and coordinate Abandoned Mines Rehabilitation projects
- prepare specifications or conditions of contracts
- You are licensed with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or you currently have accreditation as a Professional Engineer in a Canadian Province or Territory, and you will obtain a Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) license as a condition of accepting this position.
- You possess a valid driver's license or equivalent, as recognized by the province of Ontario.
- You have a degree in Civil or Geotechnical Engineering.
- Experience applying civil or geotechnical engineering principles to water management, emergency response, and compliance work.
- Knowledge in at least one area:
- Civil/Geotechnical: soil mechanics, seismic assessment, design and construction oversight of earth embankment dams
- Hydrogeology: groundwater modelling and geochemistry
- Hydrology: surface water modelling, spillway and channel design, erosion and sediment control
- Experience with pollution control and mine rehabilitation, including acid rock drainage, metal leaching, hydrology, and tailings management.
- Working understanding of key federal and provincial legislation related to mining, water, environment, health and safety, species protection, and environmental assessment.
Skills:
- Strong relationship-building and consultation skills to support project planning, issue resolution, and collaboration with stakeholders.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills to prepare reports, present options, and explain technical issues to diverse audiences.
- Ability to translate complex engineering data into clear, actionable recommendations.
- Project planning and coordination skills to lead or support multiple capital projects, ensuring they are delivered on time and within budget.
