The roleThe GIS Intern will support the Geographic Information Systems (GIS) team by assisting with spatial data preparation, map production, and documentation tasks. This internship is designed to provide practical, hands‑on experience in applied GIS workflows within an enterprise or public‑sector environment, under the guidance of experienced GIS professionals. It is designed for a technically inclined student who wants hands‑on experience working with GIS in a modern, cloud‑centric information technology environment within a Government of Canada context.
Responsibilities- Assist with the preparation, review, and organization of spatial datasets (vector and raster).
- Support map production for internal teams and project needs (e.g., layouts, web maps, reference maps).
- Perform basic editing, attribute updates, and quality checks on GIS data.
- Help document GIS processes, data sources, and metadata.
- Support simple analysis or data visualization tasks as assigned.
- Assist with data governance tasks.
- Participate in team meetings and learn established GIS standards and governance practices.
- Carry out tasks related to GIS‑specific research and development.
- Enrollment in or recent completion of a program in GIS, Geography, Geomatics, Environmental Studies, Planning, Computer or Information Sciences or a related field.
- Basic familiarity with ArcGIS Pro (v3.5+), QGIS, or similar GIS software.
- Understanding of foundational GIS concepts (coordinate systems, layers, attributes).
- Strong attention to detail, self‑motivation and willingness to learn.
- Ability to follow documented procedures and work with structured data.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Exposure to enterprise GIS (ArcGIS Enterprise v11.5+), and web mapping (ArcGIS Online, Portal for ArcGIS, web maps).
- Basic experience with Excel or tabular data.
- Introductory scripting or automation exposure (e.g., Python, Safe Software FME).
- Gain hands‑on experience working within a professional GIS environment.
- Understand real‑world GIS data management, quality control, and documentation practices.
- Develop practical mapping and data preparation skills aligned with organizational standards.
- Learn how GIS supports decision‑making, planning, or public engagement activities.
- Build professional experience working on active projects with mentorship and supervision.
