Senior Construction Engineer, Structural
HDR is seeking a Senior Construction Engineer to join our Transportation – Construction Services group, working on the Ontario Line Project, reporting to the Project Manager/Construction Manager. The role involves delivering two segmental bridges for the Don Valley Crossing as part of the Ontario Line program.
Responsibilities Attend the project site full‑time during construction to review progress and verify compliance with contract documents, specifications, and drawings.
Implement established project verification procedures.
Liaise with contractors and client representatives.
Attend and lead internal and external meetings as necessary.
Review and confirm contractor‑submitted shop drawings are in conformance to contract documents.
Coordinate quality assurance reviews with the structural engineering team and other Subject Matter Experts.
Prepare status reports, observation checklists, daily and weekly reports, and other quality documentation.
Collaboratively work with a team of construction professionals, engineers, and technologists to complete daily field observations and document system assurance items.
Mentor and oversee and train junior staff as necessary.
Promote and oversee implementation of health and safety regulations.
Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or closely related field.
10 years related experience in various aspects of construction including estimating, bidding, preparing purchase orders and subcontracts, scheduling, and field engineering.
Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered (e.g., Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng)).
Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook);
Bluebeam, estimating and scheduling software, and web‑based document collaboration software.
Experience developing and managing construction engineering and inspection programs.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Valid G Driver’s License and ability to drive to site(s) with own vehicle.
Preferred Qualifications Minimum 5 years of experience on large bridge construction projects, preferably with advanced bridge construction methods involving bridge post‑tensioning and segmental bridge construction.
Knowledge and skill in interpreting and applying transportation construction practices, procedures and quality assurance techniques.
Demonstrated knowledge of relevant laws and regulations (Environmental, Health and Safety, etc.) and their application in construction contracts.
Ability to organize, prioritize and schedule work.
Ability to analyze and solve problems.
Robust people skills and the ability to interact with the owner, design project manager, contractor project manager and/or superintendent, and members of the public.
Comfortable and physically capable of working on construction sites at large heights.
