Senior Construction Engineer, Structural
HDR is seeking a Senior Construction Engineer to join our Transportation – Construction Services group, working on the Ontario Line Project, reporting to the Project Manager/Construction Manager. The role involves delivering two segmental bridges for the Don Valley Crossing as part of the Ontario Line program.
Responsibilities- Attend the project site full‑time during construction to review progress and verify compliance with contract documents, specifications, and drawings.
- Implement established project verification procedures.
- Liaise with contractors and client representatives.
- Attend and lead internal and external meetings as necessary.
- Review and confirm contractor‑submitted shop drawings are in conformance to contract documents.
- Coordinate quality assurance reviews with the structural engineering team and other Subject Matter Experts.
- Prepare status reports, observation checklists, daily and weekly reports, and other quality documentation.
- Collaboratively work with a team of construction professionals, engineers, and technologists to complete daily field observations and document system assurance items.
- Mentor and oversee and train junior staff as necessary.
- Promote and oversee implementation of health and safety regulations.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or closely related field.
- 10 years related experience in various aspects of construction including estimating, bidding, preparing purchase orders and subcontracts, scheduling, and field engineering.
- Professional engineering license recognized by the licensing board for the location of the position offered (e.g., Professional Engineer (PE or P.Eng)).
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook);
Bluebeam, estimating and scheduling software, and web‑based document collaboration software. - Experience developing and managing construction engineering and inspection programs.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Valid G Driver’s License and ability to drive to site(s) with own vehicle.
- Minimum 5 years of experience on large bridge construction projects, preferably with advanced bridge construction methods involving bridge post‑tensioning and segmental bridge construction.
- Knowledge and skill in interpreting and applying transportation construction practices, procedures and quality assurance techniques.
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant laws and regulations (Environmental, Health and Safety, etc.) and their application in construction contracts.
- Ability to organize, prioritize and schedule work.
- Ability to analyze and solve problems.
- Robust people skills and the ability to interact with the owner, design project manager, contractor project manager and/or superintendent, and members of the public.
- Comfortable and physically capable of working on construction sites at large heights.
