Reporting to the senior leader for the assigned area, the Manager, Engineering is responsible for leading specialized planning, strategy, and execution initiatives within Toronto Hydro’s distribution system. This includes providing technical leadership, managing teams, delivering investment plans, and ensuring safe, reliable, and cost‑effective grid solutions aligned with corporate and regulatory objectives.

Manager, Engineering (Non‑Wire Alternatives)
Reporting to the Senior Manager, Grid Transformation & Innovation, the Manager, Engineering (NWA) is responsible for developing and executing programs and plans related to Non‑Wires Alternatives (NWA), including energy storage and demand response. The successful candidate will evaluate demand‑side measures or technology options as alternatives to traditional poles and wires investments, and develop strategies, plans and expertise to deploy NWA in Toronto Hydro’s distribution system.
The successful candidate will also supervise planning, pre‑design, and execution of battery energy storage projects (BESS), including the development of asset management plans as required.
- Manages a team of technical professionals and students, including engineers, to build technical knowledge and expertise, and develop and execute short‑term and long‑term investment strategies and plans for non‑wires alternatives (NWA) and battery energy storage (BESS) in support of the Capacity Planning team at Toronto Hydro.
- Conducts research, studies and technical and business analyses on NWA technologies and applications, and develops options for NWA, with particular emphasis on energy storage, Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), and Local Demand Response (LDR).
- Delivers NWA and BESS investment plans and works closely with operations teams to execute plans.
- Responsible for the Investment Planning and Portfolio Reporting (IPPR) for NWA (energy storage, LDR, other flexibility services).
- Responsible for management of day‑to‑day LDR program activities, including procurement, supporting dispatch, conducting M&V and settlement as required.
- Responsible for integrating new platforms and technology with existing and new NWA programs as Toronto Hydro transitions towards a Distribution System Operator (DSO) role.
- Responsible for planning and execution of BESS projects, including all necessary studies and working with execution teams (facilities, operations) to build assets.
- Responsible for creating and managing asset management plans for all existing and new BESS resources owned and operated by Toronto Hydro.
- Accountable for prioritization of project interdependencies, risks, resourcing and project scope and change management.
- Supports options analysis of non‑wires alternatives, including demand response and BESS applications as appropriate.
- Supports the development of Benefit‑Cost Analysis (BCA), both quantitative and qualitative, to inform decision making.
- Responds to stakeholder requirements and provides input for inclusion in regulatory filings and business cases.
- Actively participates in industry working groups and committees to keep apprised of industry best practices and influence policy development and decision making.
- Contributes to the achievement of the strategic plans.
- Leads safety meetings and carries out safety responsibilities in accordance with current safety performance standards, and participates in the development of improved safety programs.
- Forecasts work volumes and resourcing; prioritizes and manages workflows to ensure all internal and external deadlines are met.
