Overview
The Design Manager, Gateway Program role will be hired under the Engineering Management Centre of Excellence group within the Engineering Management Technical Professional Organization of Engineering Services Canada. The role supports the delivery of Engineering Services on a large project, reporting to the Director of Operations and leading multidisciplinary design standards.
Role Responsibilities- Lead and coordinate implementation of multi-disciplinary design standards and collaborate with the main contractor.
- Oversee pre‑construction phase services, including planning, design phases, site development, permitting, and procurement support.
- Serve as client interface at multiple levels, providing technical advice and subject matter expertise.
- Manage design consultancy agreements to meet contract technical specifications, schedule, and cost goals.
- Facilitate design reviews and coordinate feedback from all stakeholders.
- Manage reviews by external stakeholder groups such as airlines, agencies, and authorities.
- Provide management and executive‑level progress and performance reports highlighting risks and opportunities.
- Manage client reviews and approvals at all phases and facilitate handover between development and construction.
- Provide technical assistance to delivery teams, supporting design phases and program delivery.
- Conduct and coordinate quality reviews for compliance with program scope and requirements.
- Coach, mentor, and support career development of project staff.
- 10+ years of professional experience in large capital programs in engineering and design management, with a focus on airport infrastructure and new terminal construction over $1 Bn.
- Demonstrable experience with AutoCAD, Revit (Micro Station an asset), BIM, Civil 3D, and Microsoft Office.
- Experience performing design reviews and facilitating design coordination activities.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, including leading workshops with large groups.
- Strong technical capability across all project phases and ability to solve complex problems using data analytics.
- Experience managing senior stakeholder relationships and delivering strategic level reporting for decision‑making.
- A recognized engineering or architecture degree; professional designation considered an asset.
- Good working knowledge of program development – scope finalization, cost estimating, scheduling, and risk assessment.
The role is based in person five days a week at the project office.
CompensationAnnual salary falls between $125,000 – 160,000 CAD, based on skills, experience, and impact.
