What is the Opportunity?

Faster. Smarter. Safer. This is how Aecon Utilities is committed to delivering projects. As we continue our growth and strengthen our capabilities across complex electrical infrastructure, Aecon Utilities is ready to become Canada’s #1 utility construction provider — and we’re looking for a Senior Estimator – Substations & Electrical to help us get there.

Reporting to the Lead Estimator, the Senior Estimator will play a key role in the development of accurate, competitive, and strategic cost estimates for complex electrical and substation projects, supporting successful bid submissions and strong project execution.

This role brings a higher level of technical expertise, leadership, and accountability, and works closely with internal stakeholders to drive financial performance and continuous improvement across the estimating function.

What You’ll Do Here:
  • Lead the development of detailed and accurate estimates for electrical and substation projects, including greenfield and brownfield work.
  • Review, analyze, and interpret drawings, specifications, contracts, addenda, quotations, and other bid documentation.
  • Perform and/or oversee quantity take-offs during early design and from issued-for-construction drawings.
  • Coordinate and evaluate pricing from Subcontractors and Suppliers, incorporating scope reviews, bid leveling, and risk assessments.
  • Collaborate closely with Procurement, Operations, PMO, Finance, and Engineering to align estimate strategies with execution plans.
  • Formulate full cost models for tender submissions, including labour, equipment, materials, rentals, subcontractors, indirects, risk, and contingency.
  • Provide leadership and guidance to junior estimators and support estimating best practices and standardization.
  • Be accountable for the accuracy, completeness, and competitiveness of assigned estimates and submissions.
  • Lead Bid Closing, Bid Review, and Bid Handover meetings, ensuring clear communication of assumptions, risks, and opportunities.
  • Prepare recommendations for subcontract awards and support procurement strategies as required.
  • Support project setup and transition from estimate to execution, ensuring continuity of pricing logic and scope understanding.
  • Track, forecast, and report on the financial performance of selected projects and support corporate forecasting efforts as needed.
  • Complete Post-Bid and Post-Project Analysis, ensuring lessons learned are captured and shared.
  • Provide technical and commercial support to field and project teams throughout project execution.
  • Assist with Prequalification, RFQ, and RFI responses as required.
  • Ensure compliance with Aecon’s risk management policies, procedures, and governance requirements.
  • Foster strong relationships with Clients, Consultants, Subcontractors, and internal stakeholders.
  • Support and promote Aecon’s commitment to safety, inclusion, diversity, and a culture of belonging.
  • Travel to owner offices, project sites, and conduct pre-tender site visits as required (including occasional overnight travel).
  • Safely navigate job sites, stairs, uneven terrain, and carry drawings and documentation as required.
What You Bring to the Team:
  • Diploma, Degree, or Trade Certification in Electrical.
  • Strong experience in Electrical and Substation Estimating within utilities, power, or infrastructure environments.
  • Understanding of affiliated electrical systems, utility infrastructure, and associated civil works.
  • Minimum 7+ years of progressive estimating experience; substation, hydro, or utility experience strongly preferred.
  • Proven ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Solid understanding of contract language, commercial terms, risk allocation, bonding, and surety.
  • Strong knowledge of job cost fundamentals, cost controls, and financial reporting.
  • Experience with estimating software and strong proficiency in MS Excel, Word, Outlook, and MS Teams.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including client‑facing discussions.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple deadlines. Self‑motivated with the ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team.
  • Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel as required.
  • Professional designation considered an asset (P.Eng., C.E.T., CTech).
  • A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
