Position: Environment Manager (Transit) - GTA

Position Overview

As Kiewit continues to work on exciting projects across Canada, our Environmental team anticipates growth for the coming months. We invite environmental professionals to consider a career as an Environmental Manager. The role involves leading and overseeing environmental management practices on construction projects or within the district, ensuring compliance with legal and contractual requirements and contributing to corporate social responsibility.

District Overview

The Eastern Canada District’s projects include highways, bridges, mass transit, mine site development & open‑pit operations, hydroelectric powerhouses, wind‑power plants, dams & industrial sites. The district serves the construction and mining industries across Eastern Canada.

Location

This position is located in Toronto, Ontario.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure the environmental compliance of a project.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate environmental risks for the company.
  • Develop and update environmental plans.
  • Conduct and supervise field inspections and monitoring (water, air, noise, vibration, soil).
  • Identify wetlands and environmentally sensitive areas requiring protection before work begins.
  • Monitor project data.
  • Track, anticipate, and communicate environmental costs at the project level.
  • Design and deliver environmental protection and awareness training for all staff.
  • Act as the lead technical advisor and coordinator for environmental matters.
  • Coordinate with relevant teams regarding work locations, material needs, quantities, and invoices.
  • Interpret and implement environmental specifications and plans, minimizing negative impacts on the environment and local communities.
  • Identify, document, report, and implement corrective actions for environmental incidents.
  • Participate in project audits (internal and external).
  • Prepare reports required by the project and Kiewit, and communicate environmental risks to project management.
  • Liaise with environmental agencies and participate in site visits with the client and regulatory bodies.
  • Liaise with clients; provide information related to design, schedule, quantities, etc., ensuring they are informed of unforeseen discoveries, critical permits, and compliance issues.
  • Review requirements and prepare proposals and estimates for new contracts.
Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in environmental science, engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in environmental compliance management for the design and construction of large‑scale construction projects.
  • Qualified Environmental Professional (QEP) designation is an asset.
  • Experience coordinating a multidisciplinary team.
  • Experience with specialized disciplines, plans, and permits.
  • Knowledge of soil and water contaminants.
  • Knowledge of and experience with relevant federal and Ontario environmental policies, procedures, and legislation.
  • Experience liaising with other specialized consultants, contractors, and government authorities.
  • Pipeline inspection experience is highly desirable.
  • Strong motivation and autonomy to ensure quality work the first time.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Professional rigor and a commitment to ensuring successful project completion.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Unwavering commitment to safety and integrity.

Compensation

Base Compensation: $120,000/yr - $150,000/yr (Actual compensation is subject to variation due to education, experience, skillset, and/or location).
