Reporting to the Manager, Transportation Engineering, Transportation Engineer manages transportation engineering projects and assignments by researching, planning and implementing operational improvements to the transportation network that benefit the public transit system in the City of Toronto. Undertakes a variety of research, analysis and implementation assignments to support the Operations Planning Section activities.

What You Will Do

You will investigate and resolve operational problems on surface routes by applying knowledge of traffic signal systems and traffic engineering principles related to traffic flow, road design/geometry, traffic gaps and queuing theories for safe bus operation, etc.

You will represent the department and the TTC as technical specialist on complex internal and external studies, design/application specifics and transit priority applications.

You are required to keep abreast of technological advances in Transportation Engineering.

As a technical specialist with respect to transit priority applications, advise City Transportation Services staff as to the optimum design/application.

As the incumbent, you will conduct and/or review transit/traffic impact analyses associated with new developments and make conclusions/recommendations.

You will analyze intersections being considered for transit priority and project the level of benefit that would result.

You will liaise with internal staff and with a variety of external departments and agencies (e.g. City Transportation Services, Waterfront Toronto and Metrolinx) regarding transportation engineering issues affecting the TTC (e.g. the City and TTC’s RapidTO for existing and future RapidTO corridors).

The incumbent will monitor traffic enforcement, and other traffic related matters which impact TTC services.

You will prepare various reports, memos and letters associated with the work. Attend public meetings and make presentations as required.

You will review computer simulation of complex intersections with a view to determine the best signal operation/geometric design for transit vehicles.

You will identify general priority measures for transit in the City of Toronto (e.g. bus and streetcar queue jump and/or dedicated lanes).

You will set up, and analyze, the results of Speed and Delay studies to identify problem locations and recommend possible courses of action.
