What You’ll Be Doing

As a Portfolio Associate in Global Credit Finance (GCF), you play a key role within a collaborative team that manages a multi‑billion dollar portfolio of collateral assets, including Middle Market and Broadly Syndicated Loans, both as an administrative agent and participant lender. In this position, you are responsible for conducting fundamental credit analysis of loans, approving collateral asset levels for lender finance facilities, and overseeing portfolio management activities.

This includes managing third‑party data collection vendors and maintaining the internal portfolio management system. You work closely with a dedicated deal team to provide financing facilities to prominent private lenders, large asset managers, and sophisticated pension clients. You also collaborate with Clients, Sales/Distribution, Risk, Treasury, and other stakeholders during the screening process for new client collateral finance trade opportunities. Based in Toronto, you are part of a global team of dynamic, hardworking, production‑focused professionals located in Toronto, New York, and London.

At CIBC we enable the work environment most optimal for you to thrive in your role. To successfully perform the work, you’ll be on‑site full‑time.

How You’ll Succeed
  • Business Growth & Client Engagement: You contribute to the growth of the GCF credit financing business by supporting Pension, Insurance, Asset Manager, and Hedge Fund clients. In this role, you make recommendations on pursuing new Broadly Syndicated Loan (BSL) and Middle Market (MM) loan financing mandates, helping to identify and advance opportunities that align with client needs and business objectives.
  • Credit Asset Management & Approval: You approve or elevate credit assets for inclusion in existing facilities, ensuring your decisions align with established procedures. You provide insights on initial asset marking and actively monitor your portfolio of loans to confirm that marks remain appropriate according to the terms of loan documents. By conducting detailed fundamental credit analysis of higher risk collateral assets, you help maintain the integrity of the portfolio.

You also complete periodic portfolio reviews for existing transactions and stay up to date on industry and economic developments to understand their potential impact on portfolio loans.
  • Technology & Data Management: You collaborate with internal systems developers and third‑party partners to create and manage technology tools that help you better identify risk and early warning signals within the collateral asset portfolio. You also ensure that lender data is regularly uploaded to these technology tools, supporting accurate and timely portfolio management.
  • Collaboration & Governance: You work in the spirit of transparency and collaboration with partners across Capital Markets Risk Management, Treasury, Accounting, Tax, and Legal. By demonstrating a keen understanding of current and evolving regulatory issues, as well as CIBC’s policies, guidelines, and procedures, you help maintain the highest standards of compliance. You also operate effectively within CIBC’s corporate governance practices, ensuring that all potential risks are appropriately addressed and that legal, reputational, and shareholder objectives are consistently met.
