Senior Advisor, External Relations
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) is a not-for-profit organization tasked with the safe, long-term management of Canada’s intermediate- and high-level radioactive waste.

Position:
One (1) Position Available – Temporary to March 2028

Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Senior Advisor, External Relations to join our fast-paced Communications team. The role involves leading, developing and implementing a stakeholder relations strategy at the national and provincial level, working with external networks such as industry groups, environmental organizations, labour groups, think tanks and chambers of commerce.

Responsibilities

Lead relationship building with NWMO stakeholders at provincial, national and international levels, excluding those in the siting areas.

Develop and implement the NWMO’s CSO and stakeholder relations strategy.

Identify, manage and prepare for all external events and meetings, including securing speaking opportunities and managing sponsor ships.

Represent NWMO in meetings with industry, partners and other stakeholders, and at external events, conferences and meetings.

Identify opportunities for alignment with stakeholder priorities.

Manage an internal stakeholder relations budget.

Support other CSO engagement efforts within the NWMO.

Contribute to the NWMO’s visibility strategy, including executive leadership efforts.

Assist with government relations initiatives as needed.

Respond to stakeholder requests, questions and concerns.

Position NWMO credibly with government, industry and stakeholder groups.

Develop strategies, messages, activities, resources and milestones to achieve outcomes.

Establish metrics to measure strategy outcomes and report progress.

Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

4-year university degree in communications, public relations or related field.

Minimum of 8 years’ experience in external affairs, stakeholder/public relations and communications, preferably in the nuclear industry.

Robust relationships/experience with environmental CSOs, labour groups, think tanks, chambers of commerce, etc.

Good understanding of government relations.

Ability to acquire and apply knowledge of NWMO’s corporate messages, priorities and approval processes.

Proven background in political stakeholder management.

Proven background in leading impactful stakeholder engagement programmes.

Experience or knowledge of regulatory processes in Canada.

Experience managing a budget.

Team player with ability to collaborate.

Excellent written communication skills across multiple styles.

Good presentation and verbal skills.

Strategically and operationally minded.

Demonstrated ability to plan, organise and prioritise.

Accountable and able to lead projects or tasks.

Ability to tackle new challenges, ask questions and manage multiple projects.

Confident and works well under pressure.

Other Requirements

Bilingualism (French/English) is a strong asset.

Must be able to operate out of the Toronto office 3 days a week.

Must be able to travel when required.

Must be eligible to work in Canada and meet security clearance requirements.

Hybrid work model: 3 days in the office (Tuesdays universal) and 2 days working from home.

Candidates in Greater Toronto Area:
Office location – 22 St. Clair Avenue East until relocation required.
