Bring your expertise,passion and enthusiasm for access, privacy and the public good to the Office ofthe Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario (IPC) and contribute toimportant public policy discussions about Ontarians’ information privacy andaccess rights.
Your ability to research, analyze and communicate about Ontario’s access and privacy landscape and the importance of privacy and transparency in the public sector, will support IPC initiatives focusedon:
- engaging and communicating with key regulatedsectors including provincial and municipal government, law enforcement, public education and child welfare
- advising on the responsible development and deployment of programs and practices across regulated sectors in Ontario
- identifying, reviewing and evaluating plansand policies, including legislative or regulatory amendments, and providing recommendation sin support of Ontarians’ access and privacy rights
- identifying, evaluating and sharing developments in privacy and transparency across Ontario, Canada, and the globe
The IPC is an independentofficer of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, with oversight responsibility for Ontario's access and privacy laws, including the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FIPPA), the Municipal Freedomof Information and Protection of Privacy Act (MFIPPA), the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) and the Part X of the Child, Youthand Family Services Act, 2017 (CYFSA). Weare looking to fill one 12-month full-time position.
Whatcan I expect to do in this role?
- Identify and document access and privacy developments in Ontario’s public sectorlandscape and other jurisdictions.
- Providepolicy and analysis to help develop policy positions and recommendations related to FIPPA, MFIPPA and Part X of the CYFSA, and other Ontariopublic-sector laws affecting privacy and transparency.
- Coordinate and engage in contacts with key internal and external partner groups.
- Leador support priority IPC policy initiatives.
- Preparematerials (e.g. briefing notes, project plans, correspondence, presentations).
- Design, develop and coordinate materials to support and improve the Policy Department’s information management and communicationflows.
- Participate in internal and external meetings,events and activities as required.
Both independently andas part of a team, you will:
- monitor for developments in Ontario’s public sector landscape, and communicate them to the policy group and other IPC staff;
- conduct research and analysis and advise on policy positions for emerging issues, legislative requirements, and strategic priority areas, to support thework of the IPC;
- lead or support projects to develop and update guidance and educational materials to assist regulated entities in meeting their privacy andaccess obligations;
- lead or support engagements with regulatedentities by coordinating engagements and evaluating and commenting on their plansand proposals related to privacy or transparency;
- coordinate and contribute to the IPC’s timely delivery of published comments on legislative, regulatory or other policyproposals;
- lead or support briefings to Commissioner andsenior management on policy-related matters;
- develop or coordinate correspondence,speaking notes and other communication materials for Commissioner and senior management;
- develop and deliver presentations to largeand small groups (e.g. conferences, sector tables);
- identify and analyze trends in access and privacy in Ontario and other jurisdictions;
- coordinate communications between Policy and other departments within the IPC, as well as between the IPC and outside regulatory bodies.
Policy and Technical Knowledge
- You have applied knowledge of access, privacy,open government and transparency issues in the public sector;
