What You Can Expect

The Inspector is responsible for conducting inspections to ensure compliance with the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act (FBCSA) and its regulations within the bereavement sector. This position plays a critical role in safeguarding the public interest by identifying and addressing non-compliance, promoting best practices, and supporting enforcement activities through evidence-based documentation.

What You'll Do Inspection & Compliance Monitoring
  • Conduct the inspection of licensed operators and new establishment applicants to determine compliance with legislative requirements. Identify areas of non-compliance and recommend corrective actions.
  • Assess compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, and internal standards
  • Conduct the analysis of documents and materials; attending operators’ sites for visual inspections and evaluates compliance with the Act.
  • Prepare inspection reports on the conduct and activities of licensees; prepare reports of findings and recommendations for further action if required.
  • Verify that corrective measures have been implemented and maintained
Complaints and Discipline Matters
  • Aid in the review and assessment of complaints.
  • Assist with follow-up to ensure corrective action has been taken in compliance and discipline matters as determined by the Registrar.
  • Make recommendations on appropriate action to be taken in cases of non-compliance and any suspected illegal activity requiring further investigation and follow-up.
  • Assist General Counsel in the preparation and material for legal proceedings and giving evidence when required.
  • Provide articulate and effective testimony in a courtroom setting related to legal proceedings.
Stakeholder Engagement and Education
  • Provide guidance to licensees and stakeholders on regulatory obligations and best practices.
  • Respond to inquiries regarding inspection findings and compliance requirements.
  • Participate in outreach initiatives to promote awareness of regulatory standards.
  • Provides input, analysis, interpretation, and other expertise to support internal stakeholders (i.e. licensing operations.)
  • Make recommendations regarding conditions to place on a license based on analysis of documents.
Documentation and Reporting
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive inspection records and evidentiary documentations.
  • Contribute to internal tracking and monitoring systems for regulatory compliance.
  • Escalate issues of concern to management and recommend enforcement actions where warranted.
What You Bring To

The Role
  • Post-secondary education in regulatory compliance, law enforcement, public administration, or a related field.
  • Certification or training in regulatory inspection, investigation techniques, or law enforcement is an asset.
  • 5+ years working in the bereavement sector and/or, have similar inspection work experience in a regulatory setting
  • Must have a valid G driver’s license, access to a reliable car and a clear driving record.
  • A calm personal confidence and ability to tactfully diffuse potentially hostile situations.
  • Understanding of the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 and/or experience and work with similar consumer protection legislation.
  • Skilled in the interpretation, application and administration of legislation and knowledge of inspection protocols and methods to provide advice and expertise and to conduct inspections of non-compliance within a regulatory compliance/enforcement environment.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an aptitude to influence through education and informed recommendations.
  • Proficient computer skills:
    Microsoft 365 including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Share File, Teams, and various databases/CRM
  • Excellent people skills, with an ability to partner with a dynamic leadership team and motivate in a team-oriented, collaborative environment
  • Possess personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and commitment to corporate mission
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities and guiding investment in people and systems
Physical/Sensory Demands
  • Frequent standing, walking, and driving during site inspections.
  • Occasional lifting of materials and inspection equipment (up to 25 lbs).
  • Visual concentration required for reviewing documents, digital records, and onsite observations.
  • Sensory attention is required for identifying conditions, observing conduct, and detecting irregularities.
