Position Summary

Speech Pathologist, Reactivation Care Centre. At North York General Hospital we continue to advance the important role we play as we advocate for healthcare initiatives in the diverse community we serve. In December 2017, the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC), in partnership with multiple hospitals in the Greater Toronto Area, opened the Reactivation Care Centre – A Central LHIN Hospital Collaborative.

As a Speech‑Language Pathologist you will provide effective and efficient client care for adult in‑patients with swallowing and/or communication difficulties at the Reactivation Care Centre, including Alternate Level of Care units and Geriatric Rehab unit. Strong interpersonal skills are integral to this role to enable effortless communication with physicians, staff, patients, and families. This position supports the Hospital’s academic mandate by advancing care through teaching and learning and/or transforming care through research and innovation.

This position contributes to the shared responsibility of ensuring health and safety policies are followed to provide for a healthy environment for staff, physicians, volunteers, learners, patients and families.

On a practical level
  • Identify, assess, and treat adult patients presenting with swallowing and/or communication disorders utilizing evidence‑based practice
  • Effectively communicate with patients, families/caregivers, staff, physicians, and external partners in a professional manner (verbal, written, and electronic)
  • Work collaboratively with patients, families/caregivers, and the interprofessional team in the development of plans of care
  • Remain self‑directed, organized and flexible in order to adapt to the demands of a changing workload and meet additional responsibilities and duties as required
  • Maintain client records and workload data in accordance with program, Hospital and College standards
  • Comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and regulations
  • Plan, develop, implement and participate in educational programs for patients, families and staff
  • Act as a preceptor to SLP students, teach other students and supervise volunteers
  • Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of departmental philosophy, goals, objectives, policies and procedures which are consistent with the Mission Statement of the program and with current clinical practice
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Speech Language Pathology from a recognized academic institution
  • Registered member in good standing with CASLPO
  • Current knowledge of a wide range of swallowing and communication disorders
  • Demonstrated 2+ years of relevant clinical experience with the geriatric population
  • Expertise in stroke management preferred
  • Experience with VFSS preferred
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both written and verbally
  • Demonstrate effective interpersonal skills
  • Proficient with computers, MS Office, data entry and patient information systems
  • Bilingualism in French/English an asset
