The Epidemiologist provides specialized epidemiological and analytic subject matter expertise to the Communicable Disease Control (CDC) portfolio within Operations and Response, supporting the Outbreak Response and Support (ORS) team on surveillance activities.
Key Responsibilities- Provide specialized expertise related to communicable diseases, including COVID-19.
- Design and coordinate surveillance data‑extraction and analysis processes to provide timely information to PHO and key stakeholders.
- Develop analytic code and perform complex manipulation of large datasets using R.
- Prepare data to support decision‑making and respond to stakeholder requests.
- Support epidemiologic research, population health assessment, and surveillance activities to generate scientific knowledge for evidence‑based communication and policy implementation.
- Identify appropriate data sources and monitor trends in epidemiologic activity at local, provincial, national, and international levels.
- Liaise with stakeholders, research and regulatory institutions, and build strong working relationships.
- Contribute to best practices in surveillance methodology, information and reporting tools.
- Prepare scientific and technical publications for internal audiences and the broader public health community.
- Present findings at local, regional, national, and international forums.
- Expertise in communicable disease surveillance, statistics, and disease control.
- Proficiency in managing large databases, data linkage, analytic code, and analysis using R or SAS.
- Experience informing public health policy and implementing new initiatives.
- Knowledge of regulations and regulatory trends in epidemiology and public health.
- Understanding of PHO’s mandate and relevant legislation such as HPPA, PHIPPA, and Ontario Public Health Standards.
- Ability to critically evaluate and synthesize information.
- Organizational and project‑management skills to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and data‑management skills.
- Master’s degree in epidemiology, public health, or a related field.
- At least 2 years of experience conducting epidemiological analysis in a public health or related setting.
- Experience with communicable disease data sources such as iPHIS (preferred).
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage diverse stakeholder groups.
- Strong oral communication for data‑needs discussions.
- Writing and editing skills for reports, manuscripts, briefing notes, and position papers.
- Ability to identify data challenges and communicate caveats effectively.
- Sound judgment in handling confidential or sensitive information.
- Capacity to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
