About the OpportunityJoin a leading investment bank's Asset Management team in downtown Toronto as a Data Engineer. This hybrid role offers the opportunity to design, build, and optimize cutting-edge Azure data solutions while working collaboratively in an Agile environment.
You'll be responsible for delivering secure, reliable datasets with strong governance, automation, and documentation—playing a key role in shaping data standards and driving innovation within a dynamic financial services setting.
Location: Downtown Toronto (Hybrid - 2 days per week in office)
What You'll Do- Design, build, and optimize Azure data pipelines and lakehouse solutions using Databricks and modern data engineering practices
- Implement and maintain Medallion architecture (bronze/silver/gold) in production environments
- Orchestrate complex data workflows using Azure Data Factory, ingesting from diverse data sources
- Develop secure, performance-optimized solutions leveraging Delta Lake, ADLS, and Azure security frameworks
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to deliver high-quality data solutions
- Contribute to CI/CD processes, code reviews, and team knowledge sharing
- Mentor junior team members and help establish data engineering best practices
What You Bring - Essential
Skills:
Experience & Technical Foundation
- 4–6 years of hands-on experience in data engineering
- Strong proficiency with Databricks (Python, Spark, Pandas) for both notebooks and modular production code
- Production experience implementing Delta Lake and Medallion architecture (bronze/silver/gold layers)
- Expertise in Azure Data Factory for building pipelines, managing integration runtimes, and orchestrating data flows
- Advanced SQL skills and performance-aware design practices
- Working knowledge of Azure Data Lake Storage (ADLS)
- Solid understanding of ETL/ELT patterns and data modeling (dimensional/star schema)
- Experience with data validation, testing, and quality assurance processes
- Familiarity with monitoring and alerting for data pipelines and jobs
Dev Ops & Security
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD for data projects (Azure Dev Ops or Git Hub Enterprise)
- Understanding of Azure Entra SSO and RBAC implementation
- Commitment to secure workspace and data access patterns
Collaboration & Ways of Working
- Agile/Scrum experience with tools like Jira and Confluence
- Strong documentation skills for pipelines and data contracts
- Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication abilities
- Proven ability to support and mentor junior colleagues
Generative AI Capabilities
- Skilled in prompt design for data tasks including ingestion, transformations, and documentation
- Experience using Copilot/ChatGPT to scaffold notebooks, generate tests, and optimize SQL/Spark code
- Responsible AI practices: validates outputs, avoids PII in prompts, adheres to governance guardrails
Nice-to-Have Skills (Training Provided):
- Unity Catalog migration (Hive to Unity) and governance frameworks
- Databricks Dev Ops (cluster configuration, secret management, workspace automation)
- Azure Functions (C# or Python) for advanced orchestration
- Synapse dedicated SQL pools, dbt, or Delta Live Tables
- Data governance tools such as Purview or Collibra
- Infrastructure as Code using Terraform or Bicep
- Working within locked-down, regulated environments
