Senior Data Scientist
One of Alquemy's clients, a crown corporation in downtown Toronto is looking to bring on a full-time Senior Data Scientist with Capital Markets experience.
About the RoleReporting to the Head of Data Strategy & Analytics, the Senior Data Scientist is accountable for the end-to-end design, delivery, and continuous improvement of advanced analytics and data science solutions. The role operates with a high degree of autonomy, leading complex initiatives, shaping analytics capabilities, and influencing data-driven decision-making across the organization. This position serves as a subject matter expert, responsible for translating ambiguous business challenges into scalable data solutions, driving innovation, and contributing to the strategic direction of analytics.
Responsibilities- Advanced Analytics and Data Science Delivery:
- Own and be accountable for the full lifecycle of data science products, including problem framing, design, development, deployment, and post-implementation optimization, ensuring alignment with business priorities and measurable outcomes.
- Mine, clean, and deliver data products to business users using expertise to write code, analyze, and synthesize large datasets.
- Deliver dashboard insights and data science services to internal organizational branches.
- Architect, test, and deliver complex cloud-based analytics in a prototype fashion to establish quick wins and business value.
- Governance, Standards, and Quality Assurance:
- Define, implement, and continuously enhance analytics standards, methodologies, and best practices across the function.
- Serve as a subject matter expert participating in code reviews, knowledge sharing, and quality assurance of deliverable outputs.
- Ensure analytics solutions deliver measurable business value, including adoption, usability, and impact on decision-making.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Advisory:
- Build and manage senior stakeholder relationships, influencing priorities, shaping requirements, and aligning analytics solutions with organizational objectives.
- Provide strategic advisory support to business leaders by identifying opportunities to leverage data and analytics to address regulatory, operational, and policy challenges.
- Liaise effectively with organizational staff on opportunities to improve analytics and data science support, designing actionable implementation plans including requirement gathering, sprint reviews, capability demonstrations, and sustained product delivery.
- Domain-Specific Expertise & Data Management:
- Apply in-depth knowledge of financial concepts, capital markets, and market participants, alongside relevant regulatory frameworks, to meet analytics and data science needs.
- Build and maintain security master databases for various financial instruments, including equities, bonds, exchange-traded and OTC derivatives, FX, and interest rates.
- Leadership and Project Management:
- Lead and independently manage multiple complex analytics initiatives, including prioritization, stakeholder alignment, risk mitigation, and delivery against defined outcomes and service level commitments.
- Participate as a team member in an Agile framework, leading ceremonies such as sprint planning, backlog grooming, stakeholder demos, and daily scrums.
- Provide mentorship, technical guidance, and informal leadership to junior team members, supporting capability development and promoting best practices across the team.
- Education:
- Undergraduate degree in STEM programs, including Mathematics, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Business, or a related discipline.
- Master's degree in a related discipline preferred but not required.
- Experience:
- 5+ years of relevant experience in Data Science or Advanced Analytics roles within the capital markets industry.
- Demonstrated experience leading complex, ambiguous data science initiatives with minimal supervision.
- Experience with Advanced Analytics, Data Science, and/or application development.
- Proven track record of contributing to growing teams and expert knowledge of Agile methodologies.
- Experience mentoring or coaching team members and contributing to team capability development.
- Technical & Analytical
Skills: - Advanced proficiency working with analytics and application development languages/tools, such as Python, R, Scala, Spark, Angular, React JS, PowerBI, etc.
- Ability to accurately, thoroughly, and efficiently handle and analyze high volumes of data from a variety of sources, formulating data into clear qualitative and quantitative formats.
- Excellent organization and planning skills, with the ability to anticipate and mitigate business problems and navigate ambiguity.
- Ability to develop and deliver effective reports, presentations, briefing notes, and papers to management.
- Sophisticated communication skills with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively within a team environment.
