Overview
Zurich Canada’s Middle Market business is growing. If you have experience in commercial lines auto underwriting in the Middle Market space and are looking for a new challenge, Zurich Canada would love to hear from you. This posting is for an Auto Underwriter, Middle Market for the Ontario region. Reporting to the VP, Middle Market, Ontario Region, you will be responsible for creating strong broker relationships to provide meaningful customer service and strong commercial insurance solutions.
You will underwrite new and renewal business, engage in the marketplace to enhance the Zurich Canada brand, and shape your portfolio within the broader Middle Market strategy using The Zurich Way of Underwriting, within your delegated authority to ensure accountability and high service levels.

Responsibilities- Administer and monitor underwriting rules, guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws.
- Collaborate with Line of Business representatives and other business needs.
- Develop and maintain relationships with brokers to support business retention and acquisition.
- Act as a Help Point for agents, brokers, and customers to support sales culture.
- Seek renewal and new account opportunities proactively.
- Conduct detailed opportunity assessments with key distributors to identify growth opportunities.
- Qualify accounts to align with the organization’s business goals.
- Make planned and purposeful broker/customer calls.
- Cross-sell other lines of business to increase product density.
- Promote the organization’s products and services to increase agency penetration.
- Participate in Sales Team meetings and manage a qualified list of opportunities.
- Update systems with details of broker/client visits and account statuses.
- Serve as the key contact for assigned target accounts.
- Accurately calculate target prices using underwriting tools.
- Measure exposures, analyze risks, quote and set coverage, and negotiate terms.
- Service accounts and handle declinations/cancellations.
- Participate in marketing presentations to agents/brokers.
- Resolve technical problems and provide technical expertise for short-term projects.
- Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory controls.
- Collect evidence and deliver accurate decisions to customers.
- Monitor underwriting processes to identify improvement opportunities.
Required:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 1 or more years of experience in underwriting or market-facing area.
OR
- High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2 or more years of experience in the claims or underwriting support area.
AND
- Knowledge of the insurance industry and the legal and regulatory environment.
- Knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations and guidelines.
Preferred:
- Bachelor’s Degree.
- 1 or more years’ experience in commercial lines auto underwriting.
- Strong negotiation skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Microsoft Office.
At Zurich Canada, we are committed to pay equity and determine compensation based on objective criteria such as skills, experience, and internal equity. The salary range for this position is $65,000 to $85,000. This range reflects the expected pay for the role across Canada and may vary depending on factors like office location, specific responsibilities, and individual qualifications. As required by local law, Zurich provides in good faith a reasonable compensation range, but starting salaries may exceed this range based on a candidate’s skills and experience.
