Zurich Canada is currently looking for an AVP National Property, Central Region to provide technical expertise, guidance, and leadership as a subject matter expert, delivering high-level service to our valued customers and distribution partners.

Reporting to the VP National Property, Central Region, you will analyze and underwrite new and renewal business of the highest complexity, develop and manage broker and customer relationships, and serve as a mentor and resource to the underwriting team, helping to shape Zurich’s approach to emerging risks and best practices.

Zurich follows a hybrid work model requiring three days per week of in‑person presence, which may include time in the office or market‑facing engagements.

What you will do
  • Underwrite and analyze highly complex new and renewal business independently within delegated authority levels.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on products, guidelines, and industry trends.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, agents, and customers to drive business retention and acquisition.
  • Negotiate terms and conditions, close deals, and cross‑sell additional lines of business.
  • Provide technical guidance, mentoring, and training to junior underwriters.
  • Lead or sponsor product development and support business unit initiatives to address emerging risks.
  • Develop and implement underwriting manuals, programs, and guidelines; establish best practices.
  • Assess opportunities with distributors and proactively pursue new and renewal accounts.
  • Advise senior management and provide insights to improve business unit processes and systems.
  • Document broker/client visits and account status in required systems within established time frames.
  • Participate in sales team meetings and represent Zurich at industry events as needed.
  • Manage large and complex underwriting submissions and annual reviews.
  • Support claims teams with coverage expertise and issue resolution.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and supportive team environment.
  • Business travel and extended hours during peak periods, as required.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license.
Job Qualifications - What you bring to the table

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 7 or more years of experience in Underwriting or Market Facing roles.

OR

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 14 or more years of experience in Claims or Underwriting Support.

OR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 5 or more years of underwriting experience.

OR

  • Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice with an Associate Degree and 12 or more years of claims or underwriting support experience.

AND

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Excel.
  • Experience mentoring, coaching, or leading technical peers.
  • Proven expertise in underwriting highly complex risks.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong business relationships.
  • Demonstrated negotiation, problem‑solving, and decision‑making skills.

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree.
  • Advanced knowledge of P&C insurance products, underwriting philosophy, and regional regulations.
  • Strong presentation and communication skills.
  • Experience and comprehension of manuscript wordings within the Canadian market.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
