Job title: Professional Liability Underwriter - 125
Location: Toronto
Our client is a growing specialty insurance organization seeking an experienced and entrepreneurial underwriter to join its Professional and Specialty Liability team. This role offers the opportunity to manage and expand a profitable portfolio while building strong relationships with brokers and carrier partners.
The successful candidate will play a key role in underwriting new and renewal business, driving production, and contributing to the continued growth of a well‑established specialty insurance operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Professional & Specialty Liability Underwriting
- Underwrite new business submissions from retail brokers
- Evaluate and negotiate renewal opportunities
- Manage and maintain an existing book of business
- Develop new business opportunities through broker relationships
- Achieve assigned production and profitability objectives
- Ensure service standards are consistently met
- Support the growth of specialty liability products including:
- Medical Malpractice and Healthcare Liability
- Professional Liability (E&O)
- Directors & Officers Liability (D&O)
- Monitor broker performance and production results
- Review portfolio profitability and make underwriting adjustments as required
- Maintain disciplined underwriting practices and profitable risk selection
- Provide reporting and portfolio insights to senior leadership
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to support business growth initiatives
Qualifications
- Minimum 3‑5 years of commercial insurance underwriting experience
- Experience underwriting Professional Liability, D&O, E&O, Medical Malpractice
- MGA or specialty insurance experience is considered an asset
- RIBO, CIP, FCIP, or progress toward designation is preferred
- Post‑secondary education or equivalent industry experience
- Strong understanding of insurance principles, risk assessment, pricing, and portfolio management
- Knowledge of industry regulations, market trends, and underwriting best practices
- Proven business development and broker relationship management skills
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and underwrite complex commercial risks
