Underwriting Specialist, Commercial Lines

Job Description

Insight Global is seeking an Underwriting Specialist, Commercial Lines to join a leading Canadian commercial insurance organization on a full-time basis. This role will be responsible for managing and growing a profitable commercial portfolio through a combination of underwriting, renewals, endorsements, and new business development. Approximately 50% of the role will focus on underwriting activities, while the other 50% will involve broker relationship management and business development initiatives.

On a day-to-day basis, responsibilities will include evaluating and pricing new business submissions, managing renewals and endorsements, negotiating coverage terms and rates, and collaborating across multiple business lines to structure comprehensive insurance solutions. The successful candidate will regularly meet with broker partners, attend industry and networking events, present Sovereign’s value proposition, and execute strategic business development initiatives to achieve annual new business growth targets.

In addition, this individual will provide mentorship to junior underwriters, participate in underwriting audits, and contribute to team profitability and growth objectives.

The ideal candidate is entrepreneurial, market-facing, highly motivated, and comfortable operating with a high level of autonomy. This is a full-time hybrid opportunity based out of Toronto with the expectation to be in office two days per week.

• 8+ years of Commercial Underwriting experience, with strong new business underwriting capabilities
• Experience underwriting Construction and/or Manufacturing risks
• Proven track record of growing and managing a profitable underwriting portfolio, including ownership of renewals, endorsements, and new business production
• Strong negotiation, analytical, and risk assessment skills with experience evaluating coverage structures and pricing strategies
• Strong analytical and risk assessment skills with experience managing renewals and endorsements
• Self-starter mentality with demonstrated ownership of a portfolio and ability to work independently CIP designation considered an asset
• Existing broker network and established market presence considered a strong asset
