The Opportunity

Our client is a large, well-established global reinsurance organization with a long-standing presence in the Canadian group life & health market. Their group reinsurance underwriting team is adding a senior underwriter to support insurer clients across the country, this is a step up from day-to-day primary insurer underwriting into consultative, escalation-level work: complex, non-standard cases where there isn't already a playbook to follow.

You'd be joining a small, experienced team where technical depth and independent judgment matter more than volume, the person hired will be trusted to help shape guidelines, not just apply them.

What You'll Do

• Serve as a trusted underwriting resource for insurer clients across Canada on group reinsurance treaties, quotes, and renewals
• Take ownership of unusual or complex cases (hard-to-place risks, unusual accounting arrangements, exception scenarios) with no standard template
• Draft and negotiate treaty language and amendments; help evolve underwriting guidelines and practices
• Collaborate with actuarial, medical underwriting, claims, and senior leadership on client relationships
• Stay current on product, market, and legislative trends affecting the group benefits space

What You Bring

• 10+ years of progressive Canadian group life & health underwriting experience (insurer, reinsurer, or related consulting background)
• Strong technical foundation, able to explain the reasoning behind a guideline, not just apply it, and to build a solution when no precedent exists
• Comfort operating in ambiguous, non-black-and-white situations
• Confident, polished communication style; able to represent the organization credibly with client-side underwriting teams
• A relevant university degree is an asset (actuarial science, math, statistics, or finance), but not required for the right background
• English required;
  French is an asset but not mandatory (unless in Quebec)
