Job Description

The Bibb County School District is now accepting applications for School Custodian. Under general supervision, the purpose of the position is to perform custodial tasks for an assigned school of the district. Employees in this class are responsible for accomplishing a daily routine of custodial tasks that provide school personnel, students, and the public with an environmentally safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place to work and conduct school activities.

Minimum Qualification Standards
  • Ability to arrange, compare, count, differentiate, measure, and/or sort data and/or information, and judge whether observable characteristics are similar to or divergent from prescribed standards or routines.
  • Ability to exchange information to obtain or clarify details within established policies, procedures, and standards.
  • Ability to operate, maneuver, and control electrically powered custodial equipment and hand‑held cleaning tools.
  • Ability to use a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and advisory data and information.
  • Ability to perform addition and subtraction.
  • Ability to carry out instructions in written, oral, or diagrammatic form, with some latitude for independent judgment.
  • Punctuality, dependability, and flexibility.
  • Judgment, decisiveness, and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre‑defined duties that may change often.

Education, Training and

Experience:

High school diploma or GED preferred; supplemented by any previous experience demonstrating ability to safely and effectively operate standard facility custodial equipment, and ability to fulfill the physical requirements of the work; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Physical Demands: Tasks involve heavy physical effort, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling objects weighing 20–50 pounds, occasionally up to 100 pounds.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Use electrical cleaning equipment during assigned hours (vacuum cleaners, shampoo machines, high‑speed buffers).
  • Use appropriate chemicals and cleaners safely and productively according to instructions and State Department of Education regulations.
  • Ensure assigned areas are properly opened daily and secured upon completion (locking doors and windows, turning off electrical units).
  • Perform custodial tasks such as emptying and cleaning waste receptacles, washing windows, dusting furniture, and cleaning vents, fans, and walls.
  • Perform sanitizing tasks in restrooms, kitchen and food areas, and cafeterias.
  • Perform physically demanding tasks using heavy custodial equipment (mopping, stripping, waxing, floor buffing).
  • Respond to emergency situations to confine, resolve, or prevent hazardous conditions (spills, broken windows, broken locks).
  • Move furniture and other equipment as needed.
  • Clean equipment and tools after use and maintain cleanliness and order in storage areas.
  • Report equipment malfunctions and facility maintenance needs to the immediate supervisor.
  • Perform routine maintenance on custodial equipment (changing vacuum cleaner belts and bags, buffer machine pads).
  • Perform non‑cleaning tasks in general facility maintenance (changing light bulbs, filling paper and soap dispensers, assisting in setting up for meetings/conferences).
  • Work independently or as part of a custodial crew depending on the task (seasonal preparations or major projects).
Salary, Terms, and Benefits
  • 225 day work year; 8 hours per day.
  • Salary:
    Grade 105I – placement on salary schedule based on years of experience (up to 10 years).
