Position Summary
To oversee and maintain the operation of the fire protection training centre including overall planning, servicing, repairing, purchasing and designing for the Pre‑Service Firefighter Program training and laboratories. To provide technical assistance to students, faculty and the Academic Manager in all matters concerning the Fire Protection Training Centre and equipment associated with the Pre‑Service Firefighter Program. Ensure that all equipment, facilities, training and operations meet Health and Safety guidelines set out by the Federal and Provincial Occupational Health and Safety Acts with strict adherence to the Ontario Health and Safety Act Section 21 guidelines governing fire related activities in the Province of Ontario.
ResponsibilitiesFire Protection Training Centre Operations
- Plan, organize, oversee and maintain all Fire Protection Training Centre facilities and equipment. Participate with associated faculty in the design, modification, layout and setup of training areas.
- Participate with faculty and academic manager in determining the required training equipment. Contact and arrange with suppliers to have teaching systems and/or capital equipment demonstrated and evaluated and make recommendations of purchases.
- Monitor the condition and availability of equipment and vehicles within the Fire Protection Training Centre.
- Monitor the condition and availability of equipment and vehicles within the Fire Protection Training Centre. Repair or replace the equipment if necessary.
- Maintain accurate equipment records and implement corrective actions to minimize operational disruptions
- Arrange for outsourced repair of equipment, which cannot be adequately repaired in-house.
- Maintains and updates the chemical inventory and all Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Maintain and provide technical information for all activities that take place in the associated classrooms, training centre and firegrounds.
- Assists with fire ground scheduling and equipment utilization by monitoring dates, maintaining files and performing data entry.
- Prepare fire ground equipment for training and delivery to off‑site training.
- Assist in hiring, oversee and instruct part-time fire technicians in building teaching aids, on special projects and repair training equipment.
- Responsible for controlling operating supplies and maintenance budgets. Maintaining records on consumable supplies and capital equipment expenditures.
- Maintain and update capital equipment inventory and files of associated technical and service documentation and keep record of loan capital equipment.
- Ensure all documentation reflects adherence to Health and Safety guidelines set out by the Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) and the Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office (OFM).
- 1-year certificate or equivalent of Pre‑Service fire fighting
- OFM Certified Fire Firefighter Component 1,2 (NFPA
1001 Fire Fighter 1 &
2) - NFPA 1035 Fire & Life Safety Educator Level 1
- NFPA 1072 Hazardous Materials
- D Class Ontario Drivers License with Z Air Brake Endorsement
- Red Cross Emergency Medical Responder
- 2 years of experience, managing and overseeing fire protection/firefighting operations and fire grounds.
- Ability to determine, identify and anticipate requirements of fire protection training centres and off‑site fire ground facilities
- Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast‑paced environment
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated customer service skills
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize competing demands
