Managing Director, Employee Relations – Bank of Montreal

Responsibilities- Formulate and implement enterprise‑wide employee and industrial relations strategies, policies, and programs, ensuring alignment with business objectives.
- Provide executive‑level advice and governance on employee relations matters, including compliance with federal, provincial, and territorial legislation, privacy, and health & safety requirements.
- Lead a team of employee relations professionals, overseeing the development, promotion, and maintenance of effective employee relations programs across multiple business lines.
- Manage key employee relations initiatives and programs related to acquisitions, divestitures, employment transitions, separation agreements, and outsourcing.
- Act as primary point of contact with government agencies nationwide to influence legislative changes impacting labor and employment standards, representing BMO and participating on industry committees.
- Direct executive terminations, preparing severance packages, coaching managers on termination meetings, negotiating settlement agreements, and managing related litigation.
- Provide training on employee relations and industrial relations issues to all levels of the organization to enhance practitioner capability.
- Promote and support BMO’s risk culture, ensuring employees understand risk‑taking activities, encouraging open communication, and establishing an environment of effective challenge and tone from the top.
- Canadian law degree (mandatory).
- Minimum 10 years of Human Resources experience with a focus on employee/industrial relations.
- Strong knowledge of complex and evolving employee relations regulatory requirements across all jurisdictions where BMO FG operates.
- Experience with mediation, arbitration, and executive termination processes.
- Effective team leadership and people management skills.
- Excellent negotiation, presentation, and communication skills.
- Strong influencing, relationship management, critical thinking, and analytical skills.
- Project management experience.
- Innovative, creative, self‑starter capable of managing multiple priorities simultaneously.
Base salary range: $175,000 – $205,000 CAD. Salary type:
Salaried.
