Summary

The Sewer is a pivotal role within the Production Department, supporting the manufacturing process by sewing fabric and leather components to meet production demands. Duties include producing high‑quality covers, maintaining accuracy and consistency, and contributing to departmental goals through efficient and timely completion of assigned tasks. This position requires adherence to safety standards and established production procedures, collaboration with team members across the production cell and other departments, and a commitment to Keilhauer’s reputation for craftsmanship, reliability and attention to detail.

Primary

Responsibilities
  • Sew products within the established production standard times.
  • Produce high‑quality covers for standard and special orders.
  • Align parts, fasteners and trimmings according to seams, edges or markings.
  • Select threads and zippers based on specifications or part colour.
  • Trim excess threads and cover edges to achieve required finished quality.
  • Identify and resolve material issues to maintain product quality.
  • Manage time and prioritise tasks to meet daily production schedules.
  • Steam completed chairs as required.
  • Help new and temporary employees understand assigned tasks.
  • Contribute as a reliable and effective team member within and across production cells.
Qualifications
  • Previous experience with machine sewing of one year or more.
  • Ability to produce detailed, high‑quality end products.
  • Basic English speaking, reading and writing skills.
Essential Physical And Intellectual Requirements
  • Must be able to repetitively grip tightly and push/pull thick fabrics and leathers with fire‑retardant backing through a sewing machine.
  • Must have full use of both hands and good visual acuity to thread the needle, trim materials and hold seams open while sewing.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time while operating a sewing machine.
  • Must be able to use a foot treadle, requiring prolonged use of ankle and knee movement.
  • Must be able to use tools such as scissors and mallets.
  • Works primarily in a plant environment (approximately 100% of the time).
  • May be exposed to heat, dust and noise levels within the manufacturing environment.
